Ever seen the parking lot of an athletic dorm?

Boosters are pretty free with the cars, cashola, and fluff summer jobs.

While at ESPN, one of the coaches of a NCAA team said to me:

"If you could figure out how to make money for these young kids ... you'd be a millionaire".

I wish i could.

The only way these kids make real money, is when they get signed on to the big leagues. Even agents won't touch them except to lock them into binding agreements for rep'ing to major teams. They have no ancillary marketing appeal while in college either so that avenue is out.

Until then. The NCAA sells tickets and tv rights and make millions. The players can't even get so much as a new car and it's against league rules. It's such a losing situation for them if they don't achieve their dream and get signed.

You got former 1993 NCAA b-ball players out working at burger kings or selling crack. The fact so few even graduate (i wasn't aware of such startling statistics) is even more depressing.

Like this was any secret?? Most these guys not graduating probably barely passed high school, so why should they be so highly valued. They wind up in Burger King or McDonald's because they're stupid. Period.

Bors,

I played D-1 ball, and these statistical anomalies notwithstanding, the players are getting assplowed; pushed through a school they would not otherwise qualify, kept eligible by tutors, friends, and wink-and-nod professors.

It's a scam.

Okay, so look at the alternatives for most of these guys.
A. They get pushed thru a college they have no business being in, for a shot at pro millions, making a few thousand under the table in some cases, get to travel the country and boink lots of chicks. They have at least some shot at getting an education they can't afford any other way. They make some valuable alumni connections which is what life is all about. If they fail they get a job pushing a broom somewhere.
B. They don't get a scholarship and go straight to pushing a broom somewhere.

In the long run these guys are still better. Feel free to exploit me the same way.

Good point. I agree.

I don't necessarily feel *sorry* for them. But i can see the exploitation that's created.

I do feel sorry, however, for the hordes of young men who may tend to ignore studies in high school cuz they view college sports and it's allure, as a more attractive goal.

Ignoring academics and studies, which if they concentrated on instead, _could've_ landed them in college the normal way.

They make money in college and when that's done they go over to europe and make money there, south america is also a decent spot for some.

wages in europe range from 30g's to 1.5 mil a year if you're a former nba player. Some come back to try out for a pro team, some stay and like it better there.

And who ever is saying that players don't make money in college are very wrong.

that's almost like saying there's no indentity theft in usa and crime rate is 0. Just cause you can't see it doesn't mean it's not happening. Oh yeah and there's nothing wrong with that, why should schools make all the money and hardly leave these guys with anything.

Fair enough, but if you reset expectations sooner, you avoid this.

There is a lot of room between pro ball and a broom.
