just download a trial of a different version -- the cracks that are out there are mostly trojans or just don't work--ms gets to them too fast.

Lol, nope.
You have to purchase it if you need to have it. Open office is as close as it gets, however if this is school related be careful. I ran into this issue last year and was informed that I had to purchase it, and the most recent version too. It sucked. Luckily I got student discount but still sucked.

Occasionally I do usability studies for Microsoft cause I live near their headquarters. At the end of the study you can go to their "gratuity store" and pick any item you want for free. i usually pick the most expensive one and sell it on ebay or CL. You might try doing a search there cause many people do the same.
