Anybody own a Presa Canario?

Ok well if the puppy is free that puts a whole new paintjob on things. Still, Id check out your girlfriends friend as a breeder because getting a dog like a presa from a backyard breeder can be dangerous. A well bred Presa is an expensive puppy and its surprising to hear about anyone giving them away. But as far as the dogs go, they need to be the only dog, thats a given. They definitely need a lot of outdoor space, a big back yard is preferable. Some experience in raising and training big dominant dogs is necessary in my opinion. This is a dog that needs a strong owner who can control it without abusing it. Id say that if you can manage it, and the puppy is free and sound, Id go for it. Good luck and please update.

From what I understand the guy is a pretty reputable breeder. Apparently he produces all the necessary papers, trace bloodlines, etc. I thought it was odd he would be willing to give one away too, but if breeding Presas is his thing and he's willing to give it to her, I told my girl I would consider it.

I agree about the dog needing a backyard too. That's one thing I thought about when I heard about the incident in San Francisco, I thought I read the owner's had 2 Presas in an apartment. I would think the owner would need at least a townhouse with some sort of back yard!

The dogs that killed the lady in San Francisco were bred by violent criminals who sold guard dogs to cocaine cartels for estate and property protection. I dont think they were even pure bred presas but rather a Presa/Bandog. This type of dog, in any breed, can be a menace if not handled properly. Any guard trained dog can never be a pet once his protective instinct have been honed through years of training. Not to mention that these werent regular guard dogs, they were bred and trained by psychopaths. They are a lot of dog in a big package, but I would not judge the breed from this incident alone. To tell the truth, those dogs did nothing wrong, they just had bad masters.

I agree. Unfortunately the breed got a large amount of bad publicity because of this event.

I'm pretty sure we would be able to pick whatever dog we want. I would like to get a male, but I also thought a female would be nice in case we decided to breed her for the pups. Why do you ask? What would you do?

What I would do is find out why this guy is being so nice to my girl but thats just me lol
I would get the best female I could. Easier to handle, and a possible breeder. If this guy breeds good Presas you could get a really nice bitch.

LOL - Yeah, the same thought went through my head at first too!

Actually his family breeds Pits and his fiance's family has been breeding Presas for years. That's how he got turned onto the Presa Canario breed.

Presa's had a reputation for being quite vicious long before the girl in SF got killed. And yes - most of this is the way they were raised. But the fact is that they are big, dominant, and territorial animals. If you live out in the country or have a big yard then that would be better.

Think of this worst case scenario though. Suppose one day your dog DOES injure someone. If it's a Presa then it's NOT going to be a small injury. What is the victim going to say in court? And you will be in court if this happens. What is the judge going to think? Would it be the same situation if it were an english bulldog? Prolly not.

I'm not against these dogs - I would love to own one. I grew up owning Pits and love them so much. But nowdays you can get sued for anything by anyone. Cover your ass and think about it.

No one is giving away a good presa for free. Also, the dogs in the apartment were not presas. It was a bandog. Everyone says they were presas. But they didn't read the entire article and are just repeating what they have heard.

That third one is pretty awful, the fawn
