As mentioned in yet another brilliant post by myself, I have $500 from my employer to spend on anything non-work related. An "enrichment program", per se. So, I was thinking maybe do some rock climbing. Gotta be good for the grip and probably fun. Do girls wear skirts when they rock climb?

Yes.

Alright, ballbreaker. Please tell me about it. How did you learn? In a gym? Is it difficult? Do you rock climb outdoors? What, if any, effect did it have on your weightlifting lifestlye? Finally, why are scallops so damn delicious?

Parfaits! Parfaits have layers. Parfaits may be the best tasting damn food on the planet. Have you ever met a person, you say, "Let's get some parfait," they say, "Hell no, I don't like no parfait"? Parfaits are delicious.

Learned: in grade school. Joined the AMC in my senior year. Lots of climbing done in the White Mountains and esp. lots of winter climbing/camping on Mt. Washington et al. The Huts were the shit.

Rock climing IS outdoors. Wallclimbing is indoors. I have never been a 'bodybuilder' so climbing only enhanced my life, never got in the way.

Scallops. Oh, yes, they may be better than Parfaits.

Next time you do sea scallops, dredge them in Instant Mashed Potato Flakes and then saute them: Crisp Potato Crusted Scallops. Fuggenfuggedaboutit.

You ever do wall climbing? And I will try that scallops recipe out. With pants on, too.

I just took up climbing last month. My first trip was outdoors top-roping. I became instantly addicted and went back the next weekend, and did my first trad lead climb. Its getting colder out by me (north east) so Ive moved into the indoor gym. While not as much fun as outdoor, its excellent practice.

Technique is much more important than overall strength, and Im considering losing some weight in order to be more efficient on the rock. Im 6'5" at 230lbs now, and its alot to haul up there.

Are you on the east coast? For our trips outdoors, we took lessons at the EMS climbing school. They were excellent and would recommend using them if you decide to try it out.

Yeah, I am in western CT. There is an EMS near me, actually.

Be sure to use instant FLAKES not powder, or 'buds' whatever the fuck they are.... go Flakes or go home.

Wall climbing, yes. It's cool.

Id recommend going up to the Gunks in New Paltz. There is an EMS center right there and you can still have some fun outdoors over the next couple of weeks.

We had three guides with us the first time out, one of which was absolutely amazing, excellent teacher and would talk you through your climb with invaluable information. I have his number if you decide to go.

they also have a website

I've been going "wallclimbing" at an indoor gym for almost a year now. I've only gone climbing outdoors a few times, still not entirely comfortable lead climbing. I love the indoor gym, it's a good workout and I love the challenge of trying to climb a route that is tough.

This is the gym I belong to:

thats a really nice gym forge. Do they have auto-belays or do you climb with a partner?

The gym I go to isnt as elaborate but has some pretty difficult routes (up to 5.13), a large sport climbing section, and a pretty sweet bouldering area.

Bouldering is fun, because you don't need any gear other than maybe chalk and good grippy shoes. And you wouldn't realize how much of a workout your back/shoulders/forearms/fingers are getting.

No auto belays, but there is a top rope for every climb on the walls (lots of ropes). Many climbs have draws for lead climbing, too. The custom rock sections are really impressive, they get lots of use. Almost one whole wall is dedicated to "kiddy" climbs, 5.5's and below. We get lots of parties for kids there, lots of milfs too. :p

Most climbers who get around to lots of gyms say it's one of the best on the east coast. The next popular one seems to be a place called Earthtreks down in Maryland.
