Any NY/NJ Bartenders?

There is a bartending school around my area and they charge almost $800. Most bars or clubs do it by way of seniority, who has been there the longest. That is the way most restaurants do it, although I'm sure you can find a job through the school.

Bartending school is a gimmick! Look, you go to school to learn whats in a drink. Thats it. It does not teach you how to bartend. And the placement rate for bartenders that did not have prior work experience to attending sed school, is feeble. It works best for individuals, that are moving to a new city where no one knows them, yet they were are bartender in their old city for at least a year or two.
Your best bet- get a job as a barback with the purpose being that you will learn how to bartend. Or, get a job in a restaurant, with the desire to be a bartender known up front. They will train you, for free, and you will earn money at the same time. Also, what if you find out that you do not have the other things needed to be a bartender- like the ability to put up with the mildly annoying jerk, or the truly crusty wench in a professional manner... yer out $800.
