Any ideas of the cause of this?

I have this EXACTLY but it is in my left hand. I could have written your post. For me, it is something that pregnancy seems to have brought on - and only recently and not every night.

Nope ... although that would make sense.

I HAVE been sleeping on my left side more often. But the numbness doesn't necessarily correlate with when I am actually laying on my left side. It has happened when I am on my back, or on my right side. But always when sleeping - never when I am awake.

Yes exactly, this is why it doesn't make sense to me, I'm left handed, but it's affecting my right hand.

I haven't been able to get a good night's sleep in a week, and it's making me cranky, (as I get when I don't get a good night's sleep)

I used to get a similar problem from how I rested my arm on the arm of the chair where I worked......the way I rested my arm on the chair-arm compressed a nerve around my elbow, causing the same problem you listed......

Yep either carpal tunnel, or pinched nerve.
I would say a doctor's visit
