alcohol and gains.

anyone here find that completely cutting out alcohol dramatically improved their gains?

I drink moderate-heavy 1-2 nights a week, wondering that if I teetotaled how this would affect gains. input.

It would affect gains in a positive (Oops I meant to say negative) manner. I think alcohol also increases estrogen in men, but not totally sure on that one. Forget any alcohol that is advertized as low carb or carb free alcohol too....all liquor is either low in carbs or carb free to begin with (those being gin, bourbon, scotch, cognac....etc....)

The fat and bad weight gain comes from the alcohol content or the acetaldehyde itself. Alcohol is high in calories by itself even if there are no fat or carb values.

One easy way to think of how it would improve gains is through dehydration. Water is crucial to muscles, and alcohol causes you to become dehyrated to various levels depending on how much was drunk.
I'm sure there are a lot of other, more complex reactions but thats the one that really sticks out to me.

1) Protein Synthesis

Studies show alcohol decreases protein synthesis for a period of time (which I think was 48 hrs, with impact greatest at outset and dwindling down)

what I dont know and want to find out, is do these studies apply to steroid users?

if the mechanism of reduction in protein synthesis is altered cholesterol processing and synthesis by the liver affecting test production, then alcohol prolly wont affect steroid users as much.

if the mechanism is something other then maybe

2) Cortisol

it's known that alcohol raises cortisol levels in dose dependant fashion -- and cortisol of course will eat muscle and limit growth. -- for this effect, steroid users would be less sensitive since AAS compete with cortisol for binding the C-receptor.

I take my training quite seriously and I always advise those I train that they should stay away from drinking and getting totally buggered off alcohol but at the same time I do not fully wish to give up my life to stay committed to staying in shape. It really all depends on how fanatical you are about training and what your priorities are.

I don't think anyone tell you having a drink once a week or getting hammered once a month is really all that detramental to your shape.

Moderation of everything is always the key.

One concern if you are drinking a lot and on quite toxic aas or other substances, be thoughtful to your liver.

As always my views, goals and priorities are going to be different from others.

when i party hard 1 night my training is hsit for atleast 2 days

me and my girl love to party way to much.
i do notice my strength is weaker after drinking though.

i drank the other night while on cycle. and i did get shitfaced... i felt like shit and weak until i drank a SHITTON of water.. then i went to the gym and i was fine.. if im struggling when im lifting something heavy.. i just open my eyes big and tell meself. YOUR ON STEROIDS. AHHHHHHH! lol always helps me get that weight up! love the juice.

Same for me. I try not to drink often anymore because workouts suffer, but personally I donb't think occasionally will be that big a deal
