Advice: 2 or 3 sets when bulking?

Hey people, I've recently been given advice that when bulking I should only do 2 sets of 6-8 reps, while doing 3 exercises per body part. I've been lifting for about 6 months now and I'm used to doing 3 sets of 10 reps... while that is probably no good for bulking, I'm concerned that 2 sets might be too little. What is the general consensus on this? Any thoughts on this?

It depends on your intensity. I personally use two sets per exercise. I train a lot like Dorian Yates in a sense. On my first set I use a moderate to heavy weight to reach 8 to 10 reps. On my second set, its balls to the wall as I try to get 5 on my own, plus 2 forced, then a negative. It works good!!! There is no need for me to do a third set. Of course before you start your two sets, be sure to warm-up with a light weight to prepare the joints and to get the blood flowing. Lets say you are ready to perform bench presses and you warm up with two sets. Your next two sets will be your building sets. When you get to your incline movements, your chest is already warmed up, so there is no need to perform warmup sets for the incline. Just make your two incline sets as intense as possible. It also helps to have a training partner or a spotter when you practice this type of training.

A concern should be how much you can train without overtraining (no matter if you are cutting or bulking). When you cut, you are more likely to be in a catabolic state more often than if you were bulking. When you bulk, you are probably less likely to be overtraining.

Think about it...if you eat more, you should be able to train more too...why would you go down to 2 sets?

in dorians video, blood and guts i never saw him use anything less than 3 sets, i thought it was wierd cause ive read everywhere hes a big advocate of HIT training.

Thanks for the replies guys... you all make very good points. Think I'll stick to 3 sets in the 6-8 rep range.

What did you think of his video? I would like to purchase it.

its entire genetic. some guys i know whip off 12 sets of shoulders to failure 3 times a week no problem, and others who will do 5 sets and be completely burnt out.

experiment and see what best suits you.

although take into consideration what b fold says- if you were doing 2 sets before, lets say, and you're eating more calories now, you should be able to train higher volume or higher intensity.

lemur: Very good point. We should all listen to your advice and experiment to see what works best to suit our personal needs and bodies.
