I had no idea where to post a topic like this, so I just put it here.

I'm currently on accutane, and I was planning on going to do some tanning for like only 5 minutes per session. And I know accutane is supposed to make the skin more sensitive to light and all.

But I was just wondering if other people went tanning while on accutane.

I just finished up a 6 month course of accutane....I never went tanning....I know alot of guys that have from researching about it. However, I just asked my dermatologist yesterday and he said accutane doesn't make your skin sensitive to sun like most people including myself thought....you should be good, just go for a short time and first and see how things go

Accutane despite being a derivative of vitamin A(isotretenoin) does not carry the same photosensitization effects as mega doses of vitamin A.
I just checked the compendium of pharmaceuticals and specialties and the accutane monograph has no reported incidents in the mucocutaneous and dermatoligic section in the adverse effects. Nor is it listed in the warnings, precautions, or contraindications sections either. Believe me, if a few people reported this adverse effect, it would be listed due to a protection standpoint for the company to avoid any legal issues.
Stay away from the sun while on tetracyclines(antibiotics) as these definitely have photosensitization effects.
Also most reputable tanning salons have a thorough list of all meds. that can cause this reaction.Both for customer information and for legal protection.

I have taken accutane many times and am currently taking it now......it works great but i hate the dry lips and dry skin(no matter how much water i drink). Also accutane does make me more sensitive to the sun or ultra-violet light....so i stay away from tanning. Also on the accutane paper you get with your pills it does state that a most common side effect is sensitivity to sunlight etc.

I generally do not support tanning salons. And since you're using Accutane, I would not mix your medication with tanning. Good luck!

Sorry...My Bad...I have done more research through web sites and journal citations and have found that up to 5% of people have encountered photosensitivity. I've never experienced it during my 2mos usage, which ran from may/87 to jul/87, but then again I'm super-human when it comes to these things LOL.
Decreasing exposure times is recomended as well as a strong sunscreen while outdoors.
