I first did a marathon with no training in October of 2004 with no real training. I came in at 4:10 or so and my body was destroyed.
A month later, I did another with some training and a goal of a 9 minute pace. I met that goal and came in at around 3:58. My body was a mess.
I did a lousy job training for one in March of 05. I over dressed, dehydrated, and took about 4:40.
I did an IM in November. I barely finished in time. Was not too messed up after that. I did train but not too well for that one. Nutrition on the race was also lacking.
On Sunday, I ran the same marathon I did the 4:40 in last year and came in at 3:25. I was aiming for an 8 minute pace and did about ten seconds better than that. I also felt great after the race and the day after. Yeah, quads are kinda sore and I will probably loose a toe nail. But I feel _great_.
The difference is training. (No steriods ever - but a little ephedrine). I didn't really _believe_ that training made a difference. I have had a lot of bad races. But it definitly made the difference here.
I tracked my HR from the last races and compared them throughout the race on a .5 mile split. My heart rate was much, much lower throughout. That comes from good heart rate training. Lot of long runs at a slow pace and fast work on the track.
