A few questions...

I enlisted in the military a few months ago, and I'm still waiting to leave for basic training. A few weeks ago, I had a long talk with my best friend about him joining as well, and he wants in really bad now. The only problem is, he's got too much fat on him. I've never needed to diet, and I don't know much about exercising and what works best on what areas. I'm trying my best to help him lose the wait as quickly as possible, but I'm not sure what's the best way to approach it.

We run in the mornings, go swimming at night, and he's eating better. (less fatty foods, sodas, beer, etc)

Most of his fat seems to be in his stomach. Are there any tips anyone could offer to target the key areas, and exercises that might do the job quicker than others? Running seems OK, but I don't know if that's the most efficent way to get rid of his stomach. Maybe any special foods or over-the-counter GNC products? He's taking Stacker3's right now I believe.

Basically what we're trying to do is get his weight down, and get it down fast. And we're both willing to work our asses off to make it happen, no matter what it takes.

Anyhow, whatever tips any of you can offer are much appreciated.

Thanks,
Adam

Another quick question (about me this time). I'm very out of shape right now. If I do a real extensive workout, I get sharp pains in the mid-left-ish side of my chest. If I arch my back at all it makes the sharp pain worse, and it hurts to breathe in deep. Is this normal for someone so out of shape? Thanks again. That's it. :)

How old are you bro? Basic training is going to be hell for you if you are that out of shape. My advice would be to get your diet in check (no processed foods, no booze of any kind, as little sugar as possible, high protein, at least 1 gallon of water per day), cardio 4-5 days per week (moderate intensity) and weight train 3x per week (full body workout). You only have a few weeks so you aren't going to accomplish too much and please don't take this as a flame but why weren't you getting in shape when you first thought about enlisting instead of the last minute (or last weeks)? Good luck and tell your buddy to get in shape and wait to elist for 6-9 months otherwise they are going to destroy him and he will never make it through basic.

I had several exetremely out of shape alcoholic friends join the marines and make it through basic training just fine. At least this guy is trying to get in shape, which is more than my friends did. They said basic wasen't really that hard....
