Sorry, but your mom gave you a piece of bad advice. The WORST thing you can do is marry someone different from you. You can have different interests (that's superficial) but for a relationship to succeed long term you have to have shared ethics/morals/philosophy.

Pared down, I've always said "dog people should not marry cat people, and mountain people should not marry ocean people."

Mainly that there are plenty of people who got themselves so wound up about dying that they believed there was some way to "beat the house" so to speak. That stealing the life of another (murder) would in some way ADD to their life. Like Elizabeth Bathory believing that the blood of young women would extend her youth.
