Yep, the wife once put the lower end stuff in our 530i, couple days later when i started it up to go to work, the engine sounded like it was knocking. I asked her if she filled up the car with cheap stuff and she smirked.

Tested and proven, use 92 octane or higher

Did she use 87 or mid grade?


If it's relatively mild outside and you don't run it close to WOT, a normally aspirated engine requiring higher octane shouldn't knock, provided it's in good shape. You should be able to step down a grade under those conditions w/o knocking/pinging.
