In a show of moral support, President Barack Obama called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke on Friday defending her in the face of conservative radio icon Rush Limbaugh's "reprehensible ... personal and crude" attacks on her, the White House said.

The conversation, which lasted for "several minutes," came after Limbaugh branded Fluke a "slut" and a "prostitute" for her support of women having access to birth control, Jay Carney, the White House press secretary, said. The president made the call right before Fluke was scheduled to appear on MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Reports.

*edit* This is what's deceiving about mainstream media. This article sympathized with her right off the bat, but left the juicy stuff towards the middle about what she apparently does/says according to Rush, and completely out of the clip. Thanks to bino for the call out and props to Rush for calling a spade spade if she really is a slut. /edit


Forgive me but I feel like rambling a bit. I'd like to know what someone like Rush would think about mandating sterility implants until members of society are proven mentally, physically, emotionally, and financially competent to reproduce. That would undoubtedly prevent a lot of the trash they complain about so much. Yet what are the chances they'd comply with something like that? Good unintended example of reaping what you sow, which is ironically part of God's brand of justice, no?

Humans have a self destructive element to their biological makeup. Blame hormones, (ironically the basis of our existence), or whatever else you want to. Expecting everyone to operate based on bible standards is no different than thinking there will be world peace some day (although some societies have managed to be an elite exception...but how much progress have they made? That's a whole other discussion: is our race for progress what will ultimately lead to our end? What drives us as people, and where the hell are we planning on going? Finding the key to every lock in the universe...End-game = God?). It makes it almost seem like the whole universe is God's riddle, and that the day it solves itself could be the day it implodes.


Or not. Maybe it would be the so-far-unattainable utopia.

This is one disappointing thing about conservatives like Rush; the holier than thou, demeaning attitude towards any issue and/or person that doesn't comply with "traditional" beliefs.Forgive me but I feel like rambling a bit. so i'm assuming they subsidize abortions, my friend got one either at their clinic or thru a doc they recommended, and it was hella cheap.

Indeed, all the chicks I knew in college got it for free, college students are low income. Apparently she's on scholarship at a prestigious school which indicates to me that she's smart enough to figure it out but she just wants to be an activist; Law students are notoriously progressive.
 
Now they are handing out pamphlets and condoms in high schools. Guess they figure if the condone doesn't work, the step by step pamphlet on what to do if you get knocked up will help.

Are you suggesting to not teach them about it? I'm not sure that the "don't teach method" worked out so well.

Sure they shouldn't do it (like people shouldn't eat super fatty foods), but there's a huge difference between what people should do and will do.

An early d&c in wi today is around 800. If you get into the 2nd tri it's around 1200.

And no, you cant go in and get one for free. Medical abortion in the first tri is around 200-300 bucks.

And if she's talking about rubbers, wtf kinda douchbag loser - from a prestigious school like Georgetown no less - is she banging that she has to supply them. Yeah and I completely missed the apparent reason for Rush's comments further down in the article. All the first couple paragraphs along with the video said was he called her a slut/prostitute merely because of "her support of women having access to birth control." Easier to sympathize with vs starting off with government subsidized BC.

Not covered under what program? What IS covered? Is she provided some kind of insurance policy?
 
I agree that she shouldn't feel entitled to have it covered by her University.

However, I still don't see how this story makes her a slut? Who says she's sleeping with numerous different men? Maybe she's had the same bf since high school ? We really don't know.

I still say she should go to PP as they use a sliding scale for fees. Surely she can afford that.

I'm not saying don't teach them about it, I'm saying they are treating it now like its something that is no big deal, and if it happens, don't worry about it cause abortion will fix it. And another thing its not really taught in schools anymore, health class ain't what it used to be.

Here in WI, Gov Walker is trying to repeal our ability to teach children about sex and contraception right now and replace it with curriculum that would teach abstnence only as well as how to have a healthy pregnancy and exploration of resources avail to teen moms (the last bit doesnt sound republican at all, wtf).

It's already passed our senate and is awaiting review by the assembly. A few of my colleagues and I are helping fight this.

A few things they want to change

  1. Abstinence only programs for preventing pregnancy and STI's
  2. Requires teaching how marriage benefits society as taught through religous context
  3. Limits ability of heathcare professions to discuss health topics in classrooms (this would limit talks on smoking and drugs as well)
  4. Removes requirement that approved curriculum be medically accurate
  5. removes curriculum on how to avoid "dating violence"
  6. Removes nondiscrimiation language from current bill
  7. Removes requirement of parental notification if sex ed classes will not be taught
  8. More bogus religous based bullshit

in principle i agree with this statement but dude, i don't think she's wanting georgetown uni to pay for her contraception. I dunno, see how all this shit gets so diluted in this country we can't even have a basic discussion about shit cause it gets so confusing so quick as to what was really said.

But one thing you need to understand about birth control dude...it's not something a woman pops right before she feels like ridin some dick. It's something that "has" to be taken regularly. YOu have to be as regimented with birth control almost as you are with BP medication. If a woman misses a day she can fuck the whole thing up. So ur either on it or you're off it and you have to make those decisions for months in advance. So it's a fixed cost to the woman for the time she's on. What they need to do is come up with a full proof pill that the woman can pop right before sex or maybe a day before something like that.

spot on my e-acquaintance. This thread has minimized the other uses of contraceptives which from other articles I've read about her seem to be the central part of her argument... or at least a bigger part of it than the name calling and labeling here have made it.

Growing up(in the effing bible belt no less), a good percentage of my high school female friends were on BC due to being on accutane, or the really athletic in shape ones were on it to regulate their cycles so they were somewhat regular.

The fact that those uses are purposefully left out of people like Rush Limbaughs arguments just show how biased and unfair their childish arguments are.

But one thing you need to understand about birth control dude...it's not something a woman pops right before she feels like ridin some dick. It's something that "has" to be taken regularly. YOu have to be as regimented with birth control almost as you are with BP medication. If a woman misses a day she can fuck the whole thing up. So ur either on it or you're off it and you have to make those decisions for months in advance. So it's a fixed cost to the woman for the time she's on. What they need to do is come up with a full proof pill that the woman can pop right before sex or maybe a day before something like that.

that is exactly what she is attempting to do, force georgetown to provide their poor unwashed students access to free or discounted BC, of course on the georgetown dime (and i assume the taxpayers as well...even though G.U is private i assume they still get taxpayer loot in some form).
it's not like sex is a mandatory function...if you aren't on BC then don't have sex if you don't want to get preggos...don't have money to afford pills then buy condoms or visit a PP clinic where they give them away for free.
or, maybe just don't have sex until you can provide yourself the proper protection

(side note law school is 3 yrs not 4)
smart phone unlimited plan=anywhere from 50-100 a month
internet access for off campus students=50-70 a month, 100plus for the cable/internet package
hitting the bars up 4 times a month=can be quite spendy, low end $100
so you see there is lots of ways money can be spent and sacrifices to be made if something is more important, like BC pills.
not like it's a health issue that you will die without...still can't afford BC pills? then use condoms...can't afford condoms? then don't have sex for fucks sake, be responsible
