Military training?

One of my co-workers has joined the Army. He doesn't report to basic training until January, but they've already got him attending weekly PT sessions, and now they're stepping it up from once a week to twice and he gets closer to beginning his service.

I didn't realize that you had to do homework before Basic Training, when did they start doing this?

theyve been doing it for a while now...they do it to ensure you pass the pt tests which is the biggest reason for new recruit washouts
recruiters will do it with select prospective recruits and the guard in most states does it with all new recruits
its resulted in higher soldier retention

he joined the guard I'm assuming because only the guard do you swear in first, report later (that far out anyway)
when I enlisted I had 8 weeks before I reported to basic..I did pt and went to drills before I went and had all of my uniforms/gear before shipping out

sigh... wish I enlisted when i was younger. Still want to at 32

As far as I know it's the US Army, not the National Guard. I don't engage him on the subject because he's an obsessed fanboy about it and won't stop blabbering on and on if you give him half a chance. He's got Army wallpaper and screen savers on his computer, and even an Army mousepad. Apparently he's slated for paratrooper training. They've already flown him out to Ft. Benning in GA twice, just for some kind of registration and orientation.

I started working there in June, and he was already at it then. For a while he was spending half his work day every day on the phone getting scammed by some national bank, so he can deposit his Army pay, and they've conned him into some big insurance package and a personal loan

If he's coming to ft benning he's coming for airborne training as you stated. I live right next to that post and the majority of new recruits that are there are coming for the same training. That's pretty cool db.

Damn him for being passionate about the Army and his potential career!

We might get lucky and he'll become more cynical and turn into more of a worker/drone over time. Hope springs eternal.

If youre a fatbody the military will start you out on PT months before basic.

This guy's not a fatty at all. More of a stringbean/stickboy type.

I remember at MEPS being required to pass an overhead press test on a universal machine...A stringbean could be put on remedial pt based on not being able to meet the strength requirement. I remember asking the chick if I could just lift the required amount and get it over with...she said no..you have to start at 60 pounds and work your way up to 140 pounds...really?

get into shape BEFORE basic training. Otherwise it will be hell and DS's will be on ur ass from day one.

Don't use the army as a weight loss tool.

Shirl was started 8 weeks early.

Fatty or not fatty?

She started in the reserve system so she probably attended drills before attending bct..it's normal and they focus on the most basic military skills for those newly inducted like learning the rank system, saluting, and physical fitness. In reception the Army administered the PT test and had a fat boy and remedial pt program before you could even start training...

what java said ^^ ..my scheduling had more to do with an opening in my AIT and the fact that I skipped the first 8 weeks of AIT having enlisted under the CASP program (ie I was already a licensed medic beforehand/ no need to waste everyones time)

learning the ranking system and D&C ahead of time helped me not waste a lot of time thinking about that shit in BCT
and truth be told..it saved my ass with running because I didnt run and hated running before hand and always sucked shit with distance running
theyve changed it to your recruiter does a pt test on you to see where you're at

I was a pt studette by the time I got to basic

if it makes you feel better plunkey I always had to be taped for the bmi test because I weigh a gazillion lbs

They've been doing the DEP thing for decades Db.
Some have little study books for Ranks, History ect. that they have to get signed off and can gain 1 or 2 ranks higher from E-1 to E-3, Along with passing PT standards before BootCamp.

Okay, my last close up experience with anyone joining the military was when my brother joined the Navy in 1970, right after the first draft lottery. If he hadn't joined up, he would have been drafted within the week, and sent to Vietnam. At that time, they just scraped him off jump street and sent him straight to boot camp.

crappy. Didd he come back Okay? Vietnam was a horror fest. The Navy was "generally" saved from the worst of Nam.

Joining the Navy kept him stateside. He spent the Vietnam years at Millington TN and Norfolk VA, at the NAS. Later he served in Irving TX, Miramar NAS in San Diego, Philadelphia, and Chicago. And a few months at Mildenhall in England.

I bet shirl hid jelly donuts in her footlocker

no, but I did hide my cell phone in my bra the entire time I was in basic..I hid the charger in a dryer vent on my floor and would charge it doing laundry :)

and as for my fatty-ness

I wasn't..I weigh a lot ...my kids weigh a lot.. we're all densely built...idk what to tell ya

Its called pre-basic training; its not mandatory but if u arrive at basic and got ur checklist completed u make rank; (ie. Pass your pt test, know your liniage, military alphabet, rank structure for enlisted and officers; and a few other things..) been available since at least 05' but not mandatory, jus reccommended and u get a pay increase so why the fuck not if ur govmt. property anyway, might as well get paid

I actually defended Shirlene...don't ever claim I hate you...:)

For the record, u actually got a year from enlistment date to ship to basic; they jus rush the shit outta u and make it real urgent if your not in college or have prior commitment; basicly until u arrive at zero week u can back out, even tho it doesnt seem possible; by pushing u faster gives u less time to think it thru and therefore less time to find a way out if u change ur mind..

I'm old..I went through BCT in 1989...back then you could negotiate yourself E-3 rank with a good ASVAB score or college credits and expressing a desire to change your mind.

I was that dumbass that just enlisted and started at E-1.

I went into Basic in better shape than I came out.

I was there 2 weeks before I heard the work "push-up". AF basic was only 6 weeks long then.

I lost 17 lbs, but it wasn't from anything strenuous, they didn't give you much time to eat.

We played maid everyday. Make the bed, D.I. would rip it apart and we'd make it again ... sometimes this went on for hours.

That's the Air Force..what did you expect...

Much respect to the A-10's...

the last two beds in our barracks were bunk bed with caps on the top.

near the end the D.I. gave us the Officer and Gentlemen speech saying, "in every class there's always a group that thinks they're smarter than me" ... the he pulled the cap of the bed post and pulled out candy wrappers we stored in there for several weeks.

Its been available well before 05' and they call it Delayed Entry Program also.

Used to live in San Diego, Ah Miramar....the Marines own that base now. Good thing he made out on that one. He went to North chicago to train booters?

I don't know much about his service beyond what I already wrote, except that for most of the time he was a chief, sitting on his ass in charge of an avionics warehouse. Problem was that whenever I asked about his service, he just started reeling off a bunch of alphanumeric crap that makes no sense to a civilian, and I learned to just not ask anymore.

i.e. my brother was a smartass and I pity any of the low ranking fools who had to work under him. Getting a straight answer out of him was like pulling teeth. If he had served in combat he would surely have been fragged by his own men.

Well, the army is infamous for fragging their officers, that's why they lose all their battles, they have no code of honor.

We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on?

When you design the airframe around the weapon system you must be on the right track.....Just sayin...

My commander came back with 378 holes in his warthog from Desert Storm

The pilots are encircled by titanium armor that also protects parts of the flight-control system. The redundant primary structural sections allow the aircraft to enjoy better survivability during close air support than did previous aircraft. The aircraft can survive direct hits from armor-piercing and high-explosive projectiles up to 23mm. Their self-sealing fuel cells are protected by internal and external foam. Their redundant hydraulic flight-control systems are backed up by manual systems. This permits pilots to fly and land when hydraulic power is lost.

Ummm..the corps has built an undeserved reputation killing under equipped and untrained brown people. The Army has faced and eventually defeated, albeit with many setbacks and learning experiences, the best equipped and trained European armies. Hell, the marines have celebrated beating the crap out of poorly equipped, lead, and trained third world countries in their anthem...killing Mexicans and some Barbary pirates...really...

That's why the Army has done all the real fighting and war winning; Without the Army you would still be living under the commonwealth. No rational person, looking at the evidence, could come to the conclusions you reach. It's unfortunate you will force your delusional views on your students as opposed to teaching rational thought as the basis for every argument and rewarded on exams.

Nice, but my brother was in the Navy and wasn't an officer.

Oh sorry! I dig them bell bottom boys though. I always thought it rather amusing when we would be doing PT in the Hanger Bay watching the Boatswain's Mates painting the side of the ship when it was going 25 knots.

Just sayin...The Marines were the feint...and not the attack..They just did better than expected because the Iraqi Army was even more poorly lead, trained and capable than expected.
