Audio Production Software for techno

I know we got some experienced techno/trance/house producers here. What program is a good one to start out on. I have used a demo of Fruity Loop and have liked it so far. i am trying to get the full version though.
Any other suggestions?

fl studio, ableton live, cubase, reason are the main ones

wading further out you have reaktor, max/msp,

then gets scary around pd, csound,

then you're alone with the crickets with chuck and scripting your apis directly with c++. ams is badass if you like a modular simulator.

also, the waves bundle and tc effects are good, but say chucks butterworths are just as good but you have more control.

if you are into producing generic techno, maybe d&b, idm, go with ableton live. fl studio is a good choice too though. go with max/msp if you want to do something highly altered.

I've never been pleased with the sound quality of FL's samples. Reason is kind of eh, and I only used Cubase once. Fruity is the easiest though. I used to do loops in there and export them to Cool Edit to dick around with the sound. *shrug*

ill try reason also
im not real serious about it though, just making a couple intro snippets for some of my friends' motocross vids that they make

It all depends on what you are comfortable with. I have an artist that I work with that does everything in reason. We record all his loops to 2" tape then dump them back into nuendo. Nuendo is great, but only as a multitrack software. He uses reason for everything and it's cool.

I have dabbled a few times with techno. I usually use hardware drum machines and sequencers... I record all the drum and bass grooves to 2" tape and dump into nuendo.

The rest of the music composition is done with hardware synths... Analog and digital. But I don't use any samples.. I play the synths note for note what I want. I also use acoustic instruments.

That's my take, but I am no techno expert. I only do it less than 1% of the time
