Some strange shit is going on with my home PC. Anytime I try to go to Yahoo, EBAY, Google etc....it reroutes me to some weird search assistant..it will still say..Yahoo or EBAY in the address bar, but will not bring those pages up....in fact the only way I can get into my yahoo mail (which I seldom use) is my typing the mail.yahoo.com address...........????????

I cleared my cookies restored my computer....etc...etc.....what the hell is going on??? And how do I fix it????

Thanks in advance.....

Pit :)

That's a spyware you have installed on your pc. Usually by surfing porn websites ar some unsecure links. Maybe you get redirected to something like "mysearch" or "mywebsites" or something else. If that's the case, go to control panel, add/remove programs and uninstall anything related to "My*" Then get a spyware remover like Ad-Aware (shareware) and do a full scan. Of course you should have a good updated antivirus. I recommend Symantec Norton

free ones include adaware and microsoft has a free one too. they're not the best but the price is right ( i know that don't matter to you lol)

What's the best spyware removal software???

Ad-Aware SE (second edition) Good antivirus like Norton are now detecting Spywares and Adwares on websites.

Spybot is good too, you might run both if Ad-aware doesn't get it. Also, it could the that stupid coolsearchweb one. What search assistant does it send you to?

Various tests have shown that it takes two utilities to remove most spyware. AdAware and Spybot is a good combination, as is Microsoft's tool and AdAware. MS purchased their tool from Giant and made it their own, and it's getting good reviews. Early rumblings are that MS will want money for it after it comes out of its beta period.

What I find funny is that spyware takes advantage of vulnerabilities in Windows/IE, so rather than fix those vulnerabilities, what do they do? Buy/"develop" a utility to deal with the problem.

Last I heard about Microsoft's spyware removal program, it actually removed IE as well. Remember how they ended up with egg on their faces over that. Did they ever fix it?

It says search assistant....it has a picture of a guy's profile at the top of the page that resembles the "new" Gonelifting...lol.

At the bottom it says Geo Global Solutions.....

Hey guys....while Ad-Aware found 416 things it didn't like........it still has not fixed the problem....???? Any other ideas???? :)

In my opinion, Ad-Aware trounces Spybot Search & Destroy.

I thought the opposite but I have one called Spysweeper, which isn't free. 30-day trial though.

That was a joke, dude.

Did you make sure to update the definitions file? Do the same with Spybot-Search and Destroy. Then visit trendmicro.com and do their free online virus scan. Then install a firewall.

I just know that if I run them both, Ad-aware almost always finds ones that Spybot missed, but Spybot seldom finds ones that Ad-Aware missed.

sometimes ad-aware deletes a file that Windows Xp needs to use DHCP, which if you have dsl/cable will totally screw your internet connection, It happened to 3 puters at my job and my sisters...the only way to fix it is to use a static IP (usually not an option) or reinstall XP..sucks.

Look in control panel/ add/remove programs. There is an outside shot you'll see something that can be uninstalled. Search Buddy, IE Assistant, etc....internet sounding names like that.

What D_T said. Also, if you can find the name of that search box, you can type it into google.com with the words HOW TO UNINSTALL and maybe someone else has had the problem and documented the solution.

WTF - I think that happened to me a couple months ago. How did you find out about it?

BTW, dump IE and use Firefox...this kinda shit will happen a lot less.

(...and run XP with non-admin permissions.... that will help even more)

anyone else use your comp. cause i remember installing that ebay search function. you have to agree to install it though. its not spyware or a virus. think you can uninstall it in control panel/add remove programs if i remember.

That MicrosoftAntispyware beta1 or whatever it is called is free and it an excellent program. http://www.microsoft.com/

Tons of spyware remover programs. I like spy sweeper also but I am willing to bet you have some viruses thats this program will not get rid of. If they do get rid of them they virus will just install them back on your computer.

Download CWShredder, unzip it, start the program hit the fix button.

IN control Panel - add/ remove programs
uninstall:

SyncroAD
Web_Rebates
NavExcel
and whatever else you dont think should be there

Reboot

With all other windows closed have HijackThis del alot of items that do not belong. I will have to find a list if you are not familar with what to del.

After that reboot.

Make sure you can see all files. In Control Panel - Folder Options - View check ""Show all files and folders" and uncheck "hice protected operating system files"

Search for and delete these files:
msvxd.exe
msvxd16.dll
msvxd32.dll

Hell there are lots more but those are most common.

Delete these folders:

C:\program files\web_rebates
c:\program files\windows syncroad
c:\program files\navexcel search toolbar

Delete the content of these folders:
C:\document and settings\paul\local

Also Update your norton or whatever virus protection you use and run a full scan. I use norton and when its done it shut it all the way down and run AVG.

try format c:

it should remove a lot of crap

Hey wait, don't do it !

I've tried the Microsoft antispyware which removed a couple of shits that ad aware was unable to eradicate

I learned that the hard way, 3 computers would not get IP addresses immediately after running ad-aware and deleting everything it had listed....so i said hey let me try a static address at my job, it worked fine...i tried re-installing TCP/ip, the NIC card, renewing-releasing the IP address, nothing would fix the problem except a re-install/repair of windows XP.

chewy here is a link to some people who had similiar problems, they were able to fix it because they didnt delete the quarantined files from ad-aware, but I usually delete them right away so that wasnt an option for me.
