Would you be a cop?

You're wrong. New recruits have to live up to some tough standards. Most major cities require a bachelor's degree. All of them now have very strict background checks. It ain't like it used to be.

This is from a recent (<10yrs) scientific study.

Background check...LOL That has been in effect since the beginning.

but you realize that the FBI too requires a degree so why would someone go work as a patrol/traffic officer if he can get into the real game ?

just because somebody has a degree, doesn't neccessarily mean they know what they're doing.

i know a couple of guys that have architectural degrees but don't know the first thing about building a house.

obviously this isn't the majority, and this has probably nothing to do with the topic at hand. i'm just bored

Good point. If someone put that much time into getting their degree why not go play with the big boys. Last I heard anyway it was a AA degree.

If I were you cleaner, no I wouldn't do it.

You have enough on your plate.

I'd be Batman.

You would not qualify to become a policeman. You are too intelligent.

I know. I read that article too. Some guy with a 130 (I believe) IQ was denied entry into the police department because his IQ was too high. That puts a lot of public faith into the police department when they know that the police department does not hire anybody of above average intelligence.

Look at chesty. He is not a cop anymore and he is a rocket scientist (seriously).

Hah... adds a new meaning to the "you don't have to be a rocket scientist..." saying.

On the other hand, feds (like FBI & RCMP) require smart people.

I would entertain the idea of working for the FBI if I did not have a zillion other interests on my list ahead of that. I'd at least be a real law enforcement official, but I'd have to work for the government still. Yuck.

Police departments have had background checks since the beginning of time. The bachelor's degree comment is laughable. Having a bachelor's degree does not necessarily = being intelligent.

There was this guy in my Windows Programming course two semesters ago who was close to getting his BS and he asked a new question every 10 minutes. Prof. couldn't even finish a sentence. I stopped going to class because of that asshole being so disruptive. I would estimate him as being too UN-intelligent to join the police force, yet he'll have a BS soon.

A BS doesn't mean that someone is smart. It means he sat in a chair for 4 years and took notes. It's very hard to tell if someone is smart, but it's very easy to tell if he isn't.

Most FBI S/As I know are spending all of their time doing background checks on various Federal employees and very little real work. Even before 911, most of their work is about catching embezzlers and other white collar criminals. If you want to be a cop, go to work for a mid size city (1/2 million or so) or a State police agency. I was a cop in a community of about 250,000 were I worked as a patrol officer, Detective and Narc. before becoming a DA's investigator. Now I'm a prosecutor. I loved it all.
