Working out with your significant other...who does it/has done it?

I am actually working out with my husband for the first time ever........he's never worked out before this summer, and he was starting to complain a lot about me waking up at 5am to go to the gym. Even when I'd be really quiet, he'd get cranky and told me I was ruining his sleep. Well, I have tried working out at lunches, after dinner, after work.....I am 110% a morning person, and I LOOOOOOVE morning workouts. So....I told him he should start waking up WITH me and coming to the gym for once.

Surprising enough, he said OK. Now, he's about 20 lbs heavier (not in a good way) than he was when we first met. And for a long time he just accepted it.....but, for some reason, he finally got tired of it, and this is what caused him to say OK when I asked him to come to the gym with me.

So.....I told him "you have to do this for 30 days with me - no excuses"....we are both competitive - I said he couldn't do it (heheh) and he swore he could. Fast forward to 3 months later, and we still go to the gym together every morning, and we work out in the weight room together, but we are usually doing different body parts on different days. Otherwise, we are using the same machines and bug each other. I work out with my music - he doesn't. So mostly we just pass each other when moving around the weight room, or I'll spot for him once in a while. Then we both hit the cardio equipment about the same time, and do our cardio together.

While I do like the company when I am driving to the gym, and it's great to have him there with me - other than that, it's no different at all as far as my workouts go. I have always been my best motivator, and his presence doesn't really change / add to any of that. We are there to encourage each other in our own goals......but usually get into our own workouts pretty good.

I have worked out alone forEVER.....never thought I'd actually like to have a workout buddy.....but I really do! :)

I have with some ex's I find it very hard to get that game face on get angry and pissed and lift some heavy weights. If I found a man that would entertain me through all my precontest cardio I am pretty sure I would hold on to that one for dear life.

I love when my boyfriend visits me from home (Winnipeg) or I go there for a Visit, because it gives me a chance to do something that we both love doing together.

It also gives me a chance to be able to show him where I've improved, and where I'm lacking and need a bit of a push or a new routine. He'll spot me if I need (mostly when I do legs or chest) and I'll spot him even thought I'm not anywhere near as expierenced with it as he is.

Sounds like I'm not the only one who gets the competitive fire. Since starting this thread I had gone to the gym with him twice more with similar results (ie: crippled two days later) but I think that's more a product of my being out of shape than anything else. Single or with someone I have NEVER been good about easing back into the gym.

But the subsequent visits were definitely a little bit more comfortable and he came to my rescue when I had an ipod failure and gave me his, which was very handy.

Hubby and I work out together, keeps me motivated. I used to like working out alone, but I kinda like the company. We're so busy sometimes it's the only time we get to really talk and hang out... I do my aerobics alone though, feel self conscious, but lifting,I like the company. We also watch each other's form, spot each other for bench lifts.
We like to hang out w/ each other though, after 27 plus years we enjoy each others company and enjoy, pretty much the same things. We bring our 5 dogs in the lifting area and we all hang out.

Interesting thread. I am actually going to offer to workout with my ex. She is having major shoulder surgery. I want to help her get back to where she wants to be as quick as possible. It may sound weird working out with an ex but she is an amazing person and I like to give back to her in any way possible.
She has some experience at the gym and is very athletic and competitive. My main objective would be just to get here there as much as possible so her should is in top form when she returns to competition.
I had shoulder surgery two years ago and my shoulders are in the best shape they have ever been do to how I brought them back. I want to save her the time my mistakes cost me.
It will be interesting if she is up for it! :)

I work out alone, but this is mainly because I do it early before work. However, I don't think I would anyway because I lose focus very easily if I have to do more than one thing at the same time. Like talk and work out. I need to get in the zone and stay there for me to feel like I am accomplishing something.

For me, only training for a half marathon worked together with my hubby. For daily workouts esp with weights, not so much.
