Why wouldn't the NFL want Limbaugh?

mrplunkey

Controversy sells seats. Even if you hate Rush, it would probably be a marketing coup for the league. People who hate him would be against his team. People who love him would be for his team.

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

I'd compare this to Al Frankin or Keith Olbermann owning a NASCAR team. I bet his team would catch hell, but there's be a lot of people ready to see someone swap paint with his car.

i love you plunk, but jesus you are so far up the republican party's ass with no happy medium

Set aside the specifics of Limbaugh. This is about marketing and money.

NASCAR is a seriously conservative event. There WILL be a prayer there, a pledge/national anthaem, and some sort of military show of support (recognition and fly-overs).

So what if a NASCAR team was bought by the Dixie Chicks or even Code Pink, what would I say? I'd say this is a great thing. Anything that gets people fired-up (good or bad) can only increase my viewership.

Imagine how many people who watch hoping to see Limbaugh's team fail. Now think about how many would watch hoping to see his team win. Either way, the NFL wins because people will be watching.

This is business and Business > Ideology any day of the week.

Well there's a couple reasons Brian......all of which you're perfectly aware of. Let's see.......

1) First and foremost, the NFL is comprised of 70% black players......the days of playing for a "Massa" like Limbaugh just doesn't appeal to them. They already don't like the league for penalizing them if they so much as raise their voices in triumph after a touchdown. This one's pretty simple.

2) To kind of go along with reason 1, he's a bigot/racist....no real debate there.

3) for the above reasons, he's bad for the NFL "brand". I'm really surprised at his reaction to this because he's made a career out of complaining about affirmative action on the basis that a business owner should have the leeway to hire/fire whoever he chooses even if it's based on a superficial reason such as skin color. So in this case, the NFL has chosen not to do business with him because it could potentially affect their ad revenue.....especially "WHEN", not if, when he opens his fat trap and makes the comments he's so known for and quite frankly get's off on. The NFL is simply afraid he may at some point affect their sponsors. Valid concern. Just like NFL teams for the most part wanted nothing to do with Vick.......bad for the image.

And no, it would not increase NASCAR's ratings if Olbermann bought a team. Nobody would care. Nascar would still lick ass.

I didn't see the big deal at first but Colin Cowherd spelled it out nicely. It's got nothing to do with politics. Fact is most of the owners are Republican and probably share his opinion on a lot of things. The NFL wants two things among owners - a uniform voice and QUIET.

Al Davis, Jerry Jones are high profile owners but you never hear them bad mouthing the league or teh game. The NFL doesn't want a Mark Cuban-like owner who runs his mouth about players, refs and anything else he can think of. Cuban doesn't fear the repercussions of what he says. He willingly pays whatever fines he gets. Rush would do the same because he can afford to. Even worse - he has a national radio platform to say whatever he wants, like his Donovan McNabb/the NFL wants black QB's comment, whenever he wants.

People think this is about Rush interfering with the team, not signing black players and other nonsense like that. He'll have no say in how the team is run. I bet there's 53 guys in Oakland right now that would take Rush over Al Davis any day of the week. The NFL just doesn't want to get into trying to fine him into being quiet and having to fine players who respond to whatever he says and so on and so on. Owners want it nice and quiet in the owner's box and Rush will be anything but that.

Keep in mind Mark Cuban caught all manner of flack when he wanted to buy the Chicago Cubs. He was willing to pay $300-400 million more than the next guy. Cuban did not get the team because MLB feared he would never STFU...and he's a Democrat. You're short sighted if you think this is politics.

cuz his team would get worse.. they would never rush left

But all the publicity is good for the league -- not bad for it. The NFL is about showbusiness, not football. Not seizing on this opportunity to draw even more viewers into the sport seems like a terrible marketing move.

And Rush can still say whatever he wants to -- he's got over 13 million listeners (most estimates are around 20) captured five days a week for three hours straight. He's already got the ultimate bully pulpit. Even moving 10% of those listeners over to the NFL would be a huge viewership gain. The NFL doesn't even get 100M viewers for the superbowl.

you can hate the man for his politics, can't fault you there.
but you will get pwnt trying to track this alleged bigotry down...the slave quotes and others are BS try to find them you won't.
calling him a racist-copout

But he just "feels" racist! It's in his tone... his "implied" statements. It's not what... he "says"... it's what he doesn't say!!!! You simply need to be intuitive, like me, and you'd understand this stuff.

Can't you "feel" the racism seething in his words? He obviously hates black people. Come to think of it, I believe he once said all black people should be killed. This bigot should not be allowed assets in general, let alone something as noble as an NFL team. There are incredibly high standards there to be upheld so Rush's shenanigans cannot be tolerated.

... and yes bino, this is what we've become. It's really the only viable argument for the nanny state we're implementing at an unprecedented pace.

His radio show makes for bad business.

No actually, quite the contrary.

It's 20M listeners who for the most part are middle America. I'm guessing his demographic is a little bit older, but do 18-30 year olds listen to radio commentary anyway?

I'm not buying the argument that there is any significant number of people that are not watching NFL already that will start watching NFL because Rush Limbaugh is a 3% owner of the St. Louis Rams. I doubt NY Nicks viewer-ship went up when Jay-Z bought in. I certainly didn't start watching NASCAR when they brought Magic Johnson on board.

True - The NFL doesn't quite get 100m viewers for the superbowl however it's still the most-watched sporting event of all time on American television. The half-time show will draw more interest than Rush Limbaugh's involvement.

Because Jerry Jones does not want to share his Biggest Douche Owner award.

NFL = No Fat Limbaugh

I guess it hurts to be a ugly fat racist and get publicly called on it.

It was just a week ago that he was laughing about Obama not getting the Olympics. Guess what goes around comes around huh?

move this to the politics forum! fuck i hate idiots "standing-up" for their side... who fucking cares about politics?

I still think it was a mssed marketing opportunty. I wonder how their viewership is trending in general.

plunkey, you're implying that the people who listen to Limbaugh's radio show are somehow unaware's of this "national football league". These people already watch football, and those that don't aren't going to start just cause their boy rush is a 10% owner of the awful rams. Simply put, the National Football Leauge doesn't need Rush Limbaugh to improve their exposure. Everyone already knows their product inside and out. If you don't already watch, you're doing so for a reason.......you don't like the Sport. A douche like Rush isn't going to change that. So many negatives with nary a positive.......why on earth would the NFL be kicking themselves over this?

When a fat, ugly, cigar chomping, impotent conservative Republican is shunned by a majority group of other fat, ugly, cigar chomping Republicans, well you just have to know that person must reallllllly suck.

and republicans can try to angle around this issue all they want, his soundbites have been well recorded and played.....he "SOUNDS" like a racist. Yes he's just intelligent enough to not actually admit to it......but when you hear the sneer and derision in his voice, it's hard to beleive he's not. And when he does address the issue he sounds like a 12 year old boy that's been caught playing video games past his bedtime. So whether he is or isn't, it's the perception. No high profile black free agents would come sign with the rams.

Success! We've finally found some real racism related to this controversy:

I guess telling a blaque to "get back on the porch" is a-ok now. And what does that comment about "real" blaque people mean?

Oh the irony...

not sure I see the irony seeing as it was two black men talking to each other. ANd by the way, when two black guys call each other house nigga......best to get out the way if you're white. That's between them.

ps. Rush is a bigot/racist. Stop debating it.

But... my "intuitive" powers tell me this other guy "feels" racist. It's not just what he said... it's what you could "tell" from the tone in his voice. Can't you see he "hates" Jews too? You just have to use your "intuition" and know what he really means.... he wasn't "just" talking about blacks "when" he said to "get off the porch"... he was "also" making an anti-Jew, anti-Canadian, anti-women "remark". Thats "how" this new feel "thing" works... First you "make" up your mind... then decide your keen "insight" lets you "fill" in the blanks.

What are intuiting about this comment between two black guys? One black guy called another black guy basically an uncle tom.......I mean he outright said it, so what are we "looking into" here? Let's be clear on this, you're calling a black guy a racist because he called another black guy an uncle tom........you do see this makes absolutely no sense right?
Are you still sore that white people still aren't allowed to say nigger? Well we can.............well..............sort of. Here, I'll let Chris Rock explain..

I'm appalled that you'd let that obvious anti-Jew, anti-Canadian and anti-women bigot go unchecked.

Wait a second... my "intuitive" powers are kicking-in again... It's "not" what you're "typing"... but it's "what" how you are typing it. Now I "sense" that you too must be "anti-Jew", anti-Canadian and anti-women. Yeah, that's it. My keen sense of people's "intentions" is coming through clearly "now". It "all" makes sense now... you are "one" of the bigoted guys "who" hate those not like yourself.

lol @ bros on here getting bent at rush for being racist (now you can't
track any clear racist comments down, it's in his "sound") when
they say racist things repeatedly on here.
red you've dropped considerable racist words on here
AAP you used to brag about being racist.
what gives?

The funny thing is Rush has broadcast 3 hours/day @ 5 days/week for how long? 10 years? 15 years?

So you're talking about thousands of hours of broadcasts and they can't produce a single soundbite worth airing as propaganda. They are relying on hearsay published in a book by a self-admitted Rush detractor.

The associations you're trying to make here may work on lesser minds, but not mine and not alot of others obviously. If jews and women had been talked about than you may be on to something. When Rush is "directly" talking about a circumstance involving minorities and uses his passive aggressive speech, those of us who understand the nuances of language can infer what he's trying to slyly conceal. When one black guy calls another black guy a house nigga, one can infer alot of things......but inferring that said black guy is also anti jew and misogynist isn't a rational conclusion. He may very well be, but nothing in his comments suggest that. What one can infer from his comment is that he doesn't like uncle toms and therefore may not be terribly enthused with white folk.....that I will grant you. ONe would need to hear more from him to make any firmer conclusion. Rush on the other hand has 20+ years of these sort of comments.......there's an irrefutable body of work. Here's just a sampling

"I mean, let’s face it, we didn’t have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: slavery built the South. I’m not saying we should bring it back; I’m just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark"

Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.

The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies.

I'm appalled that you'd let that obvious anti-Jew, anti-Canadian and anti-women bigot go unchecked.

You realize that quote came from a self-admitted Rush detractor's book and has never been captured on vidoetape, audio or print, don't you? If you claim otherwise, please provide a link -- I'd love to see it.

Let me show you how easy this is:

"Redsamauri once told me: All black people should be rounded up into death camps and slaughtered."

Well, there you have it. You've said something horribly worse than Rush ever has. I'm horrifically offended that you are allowed to interact day-to-day with other fine Americans.

I heard about these quotes and other similiar years ago. In my early 20's my boss at work listened to Rush every day so defacto I had to as well. I heard enough of the guy back then to establish what he was, and I was a republican back then. I distinctly remember his theatrics when he made fun of a wrestler dying from a 90foot fall. I remember it verbatim and yet I guarantee that I couldn't find nary a word of it if I tried to track down some kind of formal cite. THat guy has said alot of things on his show that probably never made public record. He literally played "it's raining men" when he reported the guy having fallen to his death, and was cracking up the whole time saying it. That's why I don't give him the benefit of the doubt on anything he say's........cause I was listening to him when he wasn't as big as he is now and didn't edit his words carefully. I remember his racist leanings all to well also. There is no debate here for me, I know what the guy is about. Do I care if someone else isn't convinced? No, if you like him you like him......but clearly there are other people who know what he's about and didn't want him to be part of their brand. And that's................"ok".

:whatever:

You do realize his show is broadcast over public airwaves, don't you? That show wasn't being privately sent to you.

Now think about how many Rush-hating people there are. If he had ever actually said that about slavery, it would have been the lead story on every cable news network -- Fox included.

Reflect for a moment. Use your critical thinking skills. Doesn't it strike you as odd that his alleged racist remarks weren't available as audio, video or transcript?

At least your racist remarks are published on the Internet, for all to see.

depends on when he said them. Back when I was listening to him I'm not even sure FOX news existed. For sure they weren't as big as they are now. I was amazed that nothing was ever said about that man literally clowning the death of a regular guy who wasn't anything criminal or anything of the sort. Just a pro wrestler who died in a stunt. That was the last time I listened to him. So I'm not surprised at all that he may have said other equally appalling things and no one picked up on it.......back then. Now......yes, he'd be crucified and rightfully so.

Do you read this stuff before you type it? Are you claiming you discovered Rush Limbaugh before his critics started scrutinizing his show? He's had liberal whack-o's closely following his statements since his earliest days in broadcasting.

and yet no one called him out on making fun of a man falling 90 ft onto his face...:whatever:.....I rest my case, I'm done.

You really should look for a graceful exit on this one.

Maybe you should have been Rush's agent since you discovered him so early.

Even now I highly doubt there are liberal court transcripters hanging on his every word...15 or so years ago when I was listening to him he wasn't nearly the GOP power he is now. He's said so many things that will never get scrutinized, and that's ok.....it's for his "fans". Even if there were audio recordings of all his shows, who's going to pore over 4 hours a day of that guy? And if you really want to find his best work, you gotta go back 15-20 years when his mouth filter was less engaged than it is now. Back then he wasn't mincing his words and he didn't care cause he was saying what he had to in order to be "provacative and inflammatory". And what we know of him now, that was when he was truly being himself. When you're on drugs, like he was, your social filter isn't quite as adept.

WTF? "court transcripters"? What exactly would a court have to do with any of this? Are you permanently stoned?

And good call on the 15-20 years ago thing... considering his drug problem was around 9 years ago -- you missed by a decade or so. Which brings me back to my original question: Are you permanently stoned?

I'm really trying to make sense out of your posts, and the idea that you're baked out of your mind is the only explanation.

it was a joke, lighten up.

yeah that's when he was caught. One can only speculate how long he had that problem.

Because black peeps are bigots....?

Racism is having a negative opinion based on a physical characteristic...it isn't about thinking someone is over rated or a comment that offends someone. Until Rush claims blacks are inferior based on the amount of melanin in their skin or some other physical characteristic...he isn't racist.

St. Louis must be in the Bluest county of a Red state, why antagonize the majority of the local fan base?

I wonder if we're getting too wrapped up in the specifics of the person involved.

Would there be an uproar if an investor group including Jessie Jackson was denied the opportunity to purchase an NHL hockey team based on his participation?
