actually seen a big ass dude using em the other day.. is this normal?

Never seen it happen in my gym. I was however watching some porn last night and one of the girls looked very much like your wife. It was weird, a good weird.

not sure, unless they are the types that i have which are wraps for the wrists as well, and the compression is good for the wrists..

Fleshlight got some lovin last night eh?

I had a buddy that did cause he had small hands and dropped the barbell on his chest one time without them. said it made him feel more secure with a false grip

maybe when he's going heavy he should just NOT use a false grip!

it is a far superior grip if used properly. wrist straps for support and compression are common practice, especially for powerlifters.

why would someone want to weaken their wrists by using shit like that..

Maybe so when he is lying there spotting his partner on upright rows the bar doesnt get snatched out of his hands by his partners awesome trap/shoulder/upperback strength.

I was thinking he meant straps such as one would use for pulling movements (wrapped around the bar). If he meant that someone had their wrists wrapped while benching...big fuckin deal.

As for the false grip...if someone using the grip has had a bar fall on their chest, I'd say it wasn't being used properly and was not "far superior" in that case. Wouldn't you?

As a matter of fact, it's only superior if you want to try to isolate the chest more by not activating (as much) the muscles in the forearms and triceps. You'll bench more weight with a regualr grip and you greatly reduce the chances of the bar rolling out of your hands (as happens with the false grip).

I hope inexperienced lifters aren't taking your advice of using a false grip.

they can only support so much weight. they are a weak link in heavy bench. i wouldnt put them in the category as lifting straps for heavy rows, deadlifts, pulldowns, or shrugs where one's grip is giving out and they are using them as a crutch. i think of it more as u would of a weight belt.

i use them for close grip bench only.

Because the spotter is doing 80% of the lifting. You don't want the guy pulling the weight out of your hands. :)

i'm talking about regular straps.. not wrist support + straps.. i know the diff.

Yeah, so I understood you correctly. The guy had straps wrapped around the bar while benching.

yes.. and it isn't the first time i've seen it.. it isn't even the 10th time i've seen it..

first time i seen a big jacked guy doing it though.. usually its little 180 lbers hitting chest/arms everyday..

I hope inexperienced lifters aren't taking your advice of using a false grip. which post are u referring to where i gave this advice? i have never instructed anyone to do this! it is certainly not for the inexperienced.

There are a few spikey haired teenagers that do that at my gym. They wear jeans and wife beaters and use only hammer strength.

Bro, go read criticalbench.com and see what the best bench pressers in the world say about the false grip. Scott Mendelson dropped 584 lbs on his chest using a false grip. This is a guy who has pressed over 800lbs., not a n00b. By the way, he does NOT advocate a false grip.

You're activating muscles to a lesser degree...specifically forearm muscles. How is that then MORE stable? You think about it. You certainly are more susceptible to having a bar crash onto your chest using a false grip though.

I am referring to the post I replied to where you are calling a false grip a "far superior" grip. If you are calling it "far superior", it would certainly seem as though you are advocating it for anyone. You say you've never instructed anyone to use a false grip? Why not? If it is "far superior" why wouldn't someone want to use it? How is a n00b to know any different? Reckless sir...reckless.

Oh, apparently it's not only not for the inexperienced...it's also not for the veery experienced...at least according to a guy who holds a few BP world records.

Prescription drug abuse is rampant here. Mormons seem to think that it's ok since they're prescribed.

I don't use straps but I wear a headband. Does nothing for my grip but makes me feel cool.

8and20, I quit doing close grip bench last year it would kill my wrist and when I wore gloves I felt I didn't have a good grip when I got the bar close to my chest. How far down do you go?
