why do basketball players raise their hand after a foul

I used to play.

It´s easier that way for the people keeping the stats to count how many fouls everyone has.

It´s also a way to keep the referee on your side, as it expresses how you admit your foul or at least accept his decision.

What Hiatussin said. The scorer isn't going to "miss" the player's number that the referee calls over to the table. Raising your hand is just a classy way of owning-up to the referee's call.

ah i see. some have said its easier for them to keep track of fouls that way but i'm sure the ppl that are tracking know most of the players

sometimes the schlep of a player will try to take blame to keep the star on the floor.

Whenever I see that, I think of Horschak screaming "Mr. Kotter, Mr. Kotter!!"
