Who is your favorite guitarist?

hanselthecaretaker

High End Bro
Platinum
Slash. I grew up with the Gunners. :rose:

Tom Petty and Eric Clapton are right up there too.

Adam Jones - Tool

He's not the fastest or most technical guitarist, but his creativity is what blows me away. He's perfect a certain sound on guitar that just works.

I have a G3 dvd and those guys are fuckin sweet!! I got baked once among the times I've watched it and it blew me away. Completely enhanced my appreciation of how good they are. :eek2:

O.k. This is like saying what's my favorite movie. It's impossible. But to me, a couple of ppl are the epitome of guitar greatness.

Robert Johnson
David Glimour
Jimmy Page
Hendrix
Angus Young

Guitar Duos:
Adrian Smith/Dave Murray
Slash/Izzy Stradlin
Clapton/Duane Allman

The list can go on forever

I don't see my name on that list.

Better give Clapton props. He could outplay either of the 2 guy's you listed. He is GOD, or didn't you know? I've seen him play side by side with Santana and there's no doubt whatsoever that he's superior.

All time greatest. Gotta give that to Jimi.

I really like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.

Sorry Razorguns, I love Zakk, but I would'nt even rate him in the the top 20 guitarists. He is the most repetitive player today.

Shadow that was avgood call on Mark Knoffler. Excellent player. Never plays with a pic. Sultans of Swing is a guitar masterpece.

Dave Navarro is extremely underrated. Very fluent with a beautiful style.

Randy Rhodes is a God, and live on forever.

I hate to say this, but Eddie Van Halen is a God as well. He influenced a whole decade of bad guitarists.

George Lynch is probably one of the most sound, technical players of the last two decades. He gets no credit. He is a wonderful player.

Billy Gibbons is bad ass, and very rarely gets mentioned.

Pepper Keenan of COC is a riff master.

Glen Tipton and K.K. Downing probablt play better off each other than any other two players. Very sound players.

Kirk Hamett is very innovative player, Just listen to Master of Puppets. That says it all.

Jake E. Lee is a wonderful guitar player A great technical player, with great chops.

John Sykes is fucking awesome. Probably one out of ten of you know who he is. Listen to Whitesnake's 1987 release with Still of the Night. He did all the guitar on that album. He also started a band called Blue Murder after that. Fucking incredible.

Adrian Vandenburg was an interesting player. Very sound.

Not fans, but I'll give credit to them both. Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.

Yngwie Malmsteen is maybe one of the fastest and technical players I have ever heard. Not fan, but I'll give him props.

The boys from Clutch are bad ass. Great riffs, and great jam players.

Jimi Hendrix is a God.

The Godfather Tony Iommi!!!!! The master of the riff. Most underrated player of all time.

Stevie Ray Vaughn ranks in my top three guitar players of all time. Amazing.

Dimebag Darrell was the most inovative players of the 90's. He ranks right up there with Iommi when it comes to playing riffs. Also a wonderful technician. His due will come.

Carlos Santana is the master of compression. If you play, you'll understand.

Robby Kreiger of the Doors id phenominal in my book. He did some amazing shit. Definetely underrated.

Angus Young is'nt one of my favorites, but he is another riff master. Sound player along with Malcom. They work excellent off each other.

Brian May of Queen is a wonderful player.

Kim Thayil from Soundgarden is a cool player. I found him to be a breath of fresh air when he come out. Same goes for Jerry Cantrell.

These players are in no particular order. I'm tired and will think of more later.

Damn, I almost forgot Gary Moore. Fucking phenominal player.

I'll add Jimmy Page, that is just because of his influence.

Nah ,I doubt that seriously. They're both are soloist and leads of thier band.
I was working with some guys at Tipitinas (you'd know the place if you've been to New Orleans) anyway the guys that setup the stages ther told me Prince took BB King's guitar and played a lick on it and gave it back to BB King. BB tried for about 10 minutes to repeat the lick and couldn't do it.

Santana needs no introduction!

I've had the pleasure of working with both of these acts. One time I thing they were even on the same bill. Fun bands, nice guys one and all.

Pick up some Pride & Glory (both cd's). And some Black Label Society. As well as his new acoustic cd that came out this year. Even got some cool blues numbers. He actually started off as a classic guitarist learning from the likes of Al Dimeola, etc when he was a wee kid.

I have everything Zakk has released. Pride and Glory IMO is his best stuff, hands down!

I fucking knew it!

My biggest influences on guitar are George Harrison & John Lennon, Pete Townshend, and Page. Harrison, Lennon, and Townshend probably have more of an influence on me, but Page is the best musician out of that bunch so he's the one I chose for this thread.

El Dandy said:
You know deebs, if Page did'nt own or play a Telecaster, you would'nt even have given him a second thought! ;)

Nah, he'd still be the riff master even on a Les Paul. Oh, wait, he used a Les Paul live for most of his career...

Actually, very few of my favorite guitarists used the Telecaster as their primary instrument, although a lot of them have gone through Tele phases.

Come to think of it, I've worked with Zakk Wylde for at least four shows. It's been a while though. I mixed an acoustic set for him here once, but he had his own tech for the BLS shows. He's easy to work with, and isn't above shooting the shit with crew members. One of the times he was here was just a day or two after he'd had his signature Les Paul stolen in Dallas.

Exactly! It amazes me how so many people think he's just "an Ozzy guitarist".

The Black Label Society show at House of Blues here in anaheim sold out in 2 hours!! Goddammit!!!! Fucking bikers. :(

Jimmy Page. there'll probably never be another one as innovative prolific, technical, creative all in one package. he changed the future of music almost as profoundly as did the beatles.

I met him & Plant backstage at some commemoration concert (I think the atlantic records anniversery or ahmet ertegen birthday concert), I thought I was gonna faint like a schoolgirl.

Telecasters have their place for certain styles of music (i still use my fender for country/bluegrass and blues licks).

But i love my Les Paul for that "heavy shit!". Les Paul Custom, EMG 81/85.

Here's a song I wrote this evening at my singer's pad with it. I'm gonna add a bridge, a solo, and he's gonna add the vocals on top with some keyboards this weekend than mix it.

It's very "current" sounding and definately written to sound bad-ass live!.

http://www.rpanda.com/WindsOfHate.mp3

right-click, save-as i think. (1.6megs).

Robert Johnson
SRV

Peter Green - Black Magic Woman, Man Of The World etc

Not the most technical but right up there when it comes to feeling.

Jimi
then BB
then Slash

I heard Little Wing on the radio lastnight - never heard it played on the radio before. easily my favorite Jimi song.

1/100 knows who he is, and that's sad.

Still Of The Night is a classic but so is the whole W's 1987 album. IMO

Fantastic player.

Simple and commanding riffs. Are you dropped D or C#? You have great tone, which guitarists today don't know shit about. Alot of riffs I've been writing lately sound alot like that, but I'm trying to play alot more melodic and getting away from all the power chords. I love my power chords though.
My custom has 81/85 EMG's as well. Our tone sounds alot alike. What are you playing thru? I get all my sound thru stomp boxes.
From amp to guitar go's like this.
MXR smart gate
Digitech Digiverb
Arion Stereo Chorus(cheap but fat chorus sound)
DOD strereo flanger
DOD 7 band eq
Digitech metal master
Arion Compressor
I power my sound with a Laney mxd120 w/s4x12Laney/Randall2x12/1x15 cab.
I love the low end from the 15"eminence legaend in the Randall cabinet. It's fucking crazy.
I just bought two days ago a brand new discontinued ESP/LTD K-500. Les Paul style body with EMG's, with a tonepro's bridge and a black satin finish. Plays like a dream and alot lighter than a Gibson.
I'm changong the bridge emg hz out with a dimarzio x2n. That will be a great sound. I love the x2n's.

I have tickets to the Covington, Ky show for the 25th. Should be crazy!
Pride and Glory was off the hook. Lomenzo laid some fat fucking bass lines on that album. I loved Zakk's raw sound and energy.

I agree with Razorguns and el dandy, and shall add ...

Alexi Laiho - Children of Bodom
Dave Murray, Adrian Smith - Iron Maiden
Glenn Tipton, KK Downing - Priest
Jonathan Donais - Shadows Fall
Jari Maenpaa - Winersun/ex. Ensiferum

All I can think off at the moment.

Wootoom, KsE has 2, but I believe you're referring to Adam Dutkewitz (sp?). :)

I'd be surprised if McCartney didn't do some of the guitar work on that tune. You can tell it's Lennon on bass because the bass is pretty plodding and lame.

Oh i forgot!

Nuno Bettencourt

and

Chris Holmes.

Chris a fucking MONSTER at guitar. Guy fucking outjammed me on guitar one night, drunk off his ass, and sent me back home crying to my mommy. Love that guy.

Abosulutely! Another example of some awesome creativity with the guitar. Not a speed demon or technical expert, but a visionary.

I'm not a Chilli Peppers fan, and never really appreciated his work until someone at work brought in a Chilli Peppers live DVD, and I couldn't stop watching him. His guitar work is understated and elegant, but catchy as hell, and he totally drives the songs. He always has great tone too.

Yeah its tough to describe really... his guitar matched up with Flea's bass is a perfect combination.

Which live DVD was that?

Dunno, but it's fairly recent, 'cause it's got material from their most recent album.

BTW, he plays a Telecaster on all the new stuff...

im gonna look for it on half.com right now

The one I saw looks to be at an outdoor show or festival. But I think it has more older tunes than the one you listed. I'll look and see if it's still in the DVD rack at work when I go in today.

But even if it's not the same one, I'm sure that any recent live performance DVD will be good, they seem to be in good form these days.

Yeah dude, I digged Soundgarden's Superunknown album.

Anyone go for those "Guitarmageddon" contests going on at Guitar Center's around the US? I was thinking about signing up for one locally -- but i'm just too busy with work to be able to swing the time off.

I checked the one at work, and it's "Live At Slane Castle".

I think you'll be pleased with the show. The only low point is one song where they let JF sing.

Flea's got a great John Entwistle Skeleton Suit thing.
cool thats the one i picked up

Buckethead is on tour opening for Galactic right now, which seems like an odd pairing. They'll be here next month.

To catch Harrison and Lennon in top form, check out "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" off the "Abbey Road" album. Lennon does the lead, and Harrison is doing the arpeggios. Both of 'em get in some pretty creditable and original blues licks in that tune.

Good call on Gary Rossington. You could also throw Allen Collins in the mix, and I believe Ronnie Van Zandt was the greatest frontman ever. Lynyrd Skynyrd only recorded for 4 years and they were really just getting started when their plane crashed. What a waste, a lot more great songs that we'll never here.
