Form what I understand about gym managers/owners and short term members sort of goes like this. We'll say the short term members walk in the door, and out fork out $350 for membership fees'. They come in for one month, hypothetically speaking. The gym managers and owners see that as membership fee divided by the numbers of days at the gym. So a short term newbie is giving them something like $12 a day for a whole year and only using the gym for that month, where as the long standing members, who use the gym regularly pay say the same $350(or in some cases lower membership fees'), but the daliy use is dramatically lower. I go six days a week, so 313 days a year. My daily fee is $1.11. That's a huge profit difference. Also they can sucker the newbies into purchase in house supplements and all the other bells' and whistles: Tanning, clothing, personal training. Long term member usually have their own sources and connections for supplemnts and what have you.
So in the long run long term members can be looked at as a small profit because we're always there. It's more or less a limited supply. Their seems to an unlimited supply of short term members. Long term members use up space, wear and tear on the equipment, and for the most part lon term membership fees' arn't subject to increase(my fee is that way, what I paid the first day is what I pay forever). Short term members are "ripe for the picking" as they say. Granted this is what I've heard from the people who work at my gym and other members, but it's a fairly sound theory. I'm not sure if it's completely true, but I wouldn't doubt it.
