E3 2005: Microsoft's Xbox 360 vs. Sony's PlayStation 3
With Sony's specs out, Microsoft has sent us its a comparitive analysis. What's the outcome?
by Douglass C. Perry
May 20, 2005 - It's 3:30 pm on Friday, May 20, the last day of E3. The fine PR folks from Microsoft, who invited us to their headquarters a week before E3 to show us their system, their specs, and the grand design behind their powerful new Xbox 360, have just sent us an urgent notice to update our specs with new information. Earlier in the day, we were sent a comparative analysis of the Xbox 360's power vs. the PlayStation 3's power.

We decided to put this Microsoft-provided information up undigested. Thus, enclosed is a Microsoft-made comparitive analysis. We have not altered, added, or tinkered with the data. We have not interpreted the specs. We have cut and pasted this information from the email into our site and formatted it. Make of it what you will, but be clear we know Microsoft has clearly slanted this info, and we're not endorsing it, just printing their version. There is a difference.

XBOX 360 / PLAYSTATION 3 PERFORMANCE COMPARISON

SUMMARY
Now that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 specifications have been announced, it is possible to do a real world performance comparison of the two systems.

There are three critical performance aspects of a console:

Central Processing Unit (CPU) performance.

The Xbox 360 CPU architecture has three times the general purpose processing power of the Cell.

Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) performance

The Xbox 360 GPU design is more flexible and it has more processing power than the PS3 GPU.

Memory System Bandwidth

The memory system bandwidth in Xbox 360 exceeds the PS3's by five times.

The Xbox 360's CPU has more general purpose processing power because it has three general purpose cores, and Cell has just one.

Cell's claimed advantage is on streaming floating point work which is done on its seven DSP processors.

The Xbox 360 GPU has more processing power than the PS3's. In addition, its innovated features contribute to overall rendering performance.

Xbox 360 has 278.4 GB/s of memory system bandwidth. The PS3 has less than one-fifth of Xbox 360's (48 GB/s) of total memory system bandwidth.

CONCLUSION
When you break down the numbers, Xbox 360 has provably more performance than PS3. Keep in mind that Sony has a track record of over promising and under delivering on technical performance. The truth is that both systems pack a lot of power for high definition games and entertainment.

However, hardware performance, while important, is only a third of the puzzle. Xbox 360 is a fusion of hardware, software and services. Without the software and services to power it, even the most powerful hardware becomes inconsequential. Xbox 360 games—by leveraging cutting-edge hardware, software, and services—will outperform the PlayStation 3.

I'm sticking with Sony for a few reasons.

1) Sony has never failed in this industry. The backed up the incredible Playstation with an even better PS2, plus their portable blows Nintendo's Gameboy out of the water. So the pretty much know what they are doing.

2) I'm really disappointed with the amount/type of games released exclusively on X-box. I mean, there's obviously titles that are on multiple platforms. But the one's that are exclusive to X-box, aren't that great. Even Halo, which may have great multi-player, is a dumb, shooter with no need for thought.

3) To build on the last point, Sony draws the most developers. They want to develop games for Sony, probably because the source code is easier to deal with. In any event, there are more types of games to choose from, and for the most part, they are all pretty good.

4) Since SNES, Nintendo has just plain sucked. Yes, the N64 was a breakthrough console, but the games absoultely sucked. They prolly made 10 different types of games starring Mario and his crew. The sports games were horrible, and there wasn't anything remotely interesting. GoldenEye was the exception. Then they followed up with GameCube, which sucked even more. What a waste of money. I grew up on Nintendo, but I can't trust them anymore.

5) Sony's console comes out later than Microsoft, which means, conceivable, Sony can make modifications based upon what the X-box 360 brings to the table.

Sony all the way.

Xbox spanks the sony. Ps2 was nothing more than a stand up book holder with major loading problems. I had my PS2 for 3 months and it started having problems loading dvd formated games witch sucked cause all the good games are dvd formated they wanted me to ship it charge me $300 something bucks to fix it i told hime i could go buy a new one for $50 buck more. the only thing ps2 had going for them was free online play. but even then they sucked slow severs even when you had it on a T-1. I have had a Xbox from the first time they released and had no problems with hardware.
dont have to buy anything extra to get 4 people playing. And the sports and other games rock.

Where did you get this information its bullshit! Why don't you go to fileplanet or somewhere and download the videos of the press confrences Sony and Microsoft did. The PS3 has way more power in every aspect of it then the Xbox 360.

You people buying Sony are supporting those damn Japs.

No matter Sony or Microsoft BOTH next-gen consoles will have more than enough hardware to run the games developers will throw at it.

I agree that Sony gets more games, but that was mainly due to them coming out with the PS2 at a time when it had no other competition. Things may very well change this time around. Microsoft has also made coding easier for 3rd parties to produce their games for the 360.

My biggest complaint is the controllers on Sony. If you are like me and play a lot of shooters, the Microsoft controller dominates. Pressure sensitive triggers and controlls makes the xbox controller superior to that of the Playstation.

No matter wich system you buy, at least we are all gamers here having fun and sharing wonderful experiences together.

Now fuck off!

I'm getting all three, just like I have right now .....

I'll wait for the revolution, just so I can buy it first and then I'll get the box and the ps3.....

Really! i find the Xbox controller is like trying to handle a grizzly bear. Or maybe i just have girls hands

I might buy xbox 360 for amped 1,2,3 because the snowboarding games for playstation suck, SSX on tour looks a bit better, but still has unrealistic tricks, and since im a hardcore boarder I want realism. other then that Ill likely just stick with my ps2 as I dont need to update a system every 3-5 years

All a matter of personal opinion.

The PS3 wont be able to compete with the online gaming that the 360 has. I like both PS and Xbox but I have to say that Xbox is the new king and the PS3 when if finally comes out wont be able to compete.

The 360's game line-up was easily the best at the 2006 E3... I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of hardware the PS3 can show off though.

Nintendo's Wii looks amazing. I'm a longtime mario fan also. The 360 is expensive, but the PS3 is a whopping $599. I think i might get a 360 around christmas. The PS3 has some flaws now too. I wonder if sony will finally be at the bottom of the console race.

i read somewhere halo 3 was going to come out the same day as the ps3 but i heard that changed from a friend so who knows. that would be a great ploy though

Games will cost up to $100 as well for the PS3!

Where did you get this info from?

Last I heard Sony still hadn't mentioned a price for games.

There really won't be much difference cost wise for producing games for the xbox360 & PS3.....I bet the PS3 games will be the same price as the 360 ones....$60

I've changed my answer from just a 360 to a 360 + A Wii

The motion controller looks pretty sweet, especially with games like Zelda, Mario World, and Metroid.

I can buy a 360 and a Wii for basically the same price of the overpriced PS3.
I think a lot of people are just buying a PS3 for the name or because they have a PS2 and haven't really did much research on it.
