whats the key to getting the bodybuilders build? i say its 33.3% diet, 33.3% training, and 33.3% recovery.
i was thinking about leaving my garage and basement for the local gym. a few years in the garage and basement is starting to get boring..
i made a few trips to the gym to look around, check out the rates, and what struck me was the guys in the gym.. they all remeinded me of all the other guys in the gyms i was a member of over the past 40 years.
meaning, they all looked like a normal bigger than average guy. 6' 200#. big arms, but not huge. doing benches and a few other movements. only a few looked fit and in shape and cut. 90% of these guys just looked like an average guy. no veins in their arms, no definition in their calfs. no abs. i could see this right away. but big boned guys. now, they trained fairly hard, did benches and presses, and pushdowns, but they lacked what the handful of others had. the actual look of a bodybuilder. some of these guys were strong . one guy was benching 3 plates and i bet he weightd 190. 5'8.. just anormal guy. strong though.
me, i am an endurance athlete. 6'150# skinny by bodybuilding standards. i am after my endurance sport and a bit of strength for that sport. what i dont understand is why over 40+ years, its the same 6 guys that look super built and fit and the other 50 looking like your normal guy. stronger, but looking like a normal guy. they talk training, diet, contests, workouts, but why is it they dont have the bodybuilding look??
they sweat, yell, lift heavy, but look normal.
is it diet??
when you come on this web site, the 6 guys look like the guy on the main page. ripped and fit looking. all 50 others at this gym looked normal.
why is this??watching them train it seems like they were going hard like the built guys.
just curious. maybe their diet is poor which meaans there is always fat around their muscles.

is diet that important?

The six guys you speak of, live, breath, eat and generally plan their lives around looking like that. The rest of the population doesn't.

Its really that simple. I think you could make the same comparison to the upper 20% of endurance athletes that you may know.

its a complete 100% dedication at any expense along with luck.

it's knowledge, resources, and want to. Do you have the knowledge? Do you have the resources? Do you have the want to? If any of these is a "no", then you wont be very successful. If you have all three you're in good shape.

and of course by resources i don't mean gear. I mean high quality foods and training equipment ect.

it seems odd, when i use to always go to the gym years ago, seeing the same guys training very hard, but after a year, barley a vein showing in their arms, they always looked the same.
it has to be diet.
way back then and now going to this new gym, seems like most are after eating everything in site to get big, but they all look so non athletic, or have a non bodybuilding look.
their hard training is there, but not the look.

Could you be mistaken in their goals. My powerlifting and strongman friends hardly look like body builders, but they are some of the hardest workers in the gym.

I know that I, in no way, look like a body builder (17-20% bf depending), but I am easily in the top 10 strongest guys in my gym. Plus I'm well north of 50.

i guess joining that seniorc fitness center is going well for you. i figured youd settle in there with the slower pace and all.

years ago, these guys were all looking in the magazines wanting to look like boyer coe, or dave draper or roger walker, so its not a powerlifting body, back then and currently now its the bb look these guys are after. they look ok, but just a bit better than a guy that dosent lift. with all the hard training, i thought seeing them in shorts and a t shirt, they be way more vascular, and cut looking, thatn they do, thats why i think most training hard need a better diet.. just my opinion.
