whats is a 5x5 routine?

5 sets of 5 reps for heavy basic movements such as bench presses, squats, and deadlift.

Many trainers claim it is excellent for adding strength and muscle to the body.
 
There are a lot of variations to the 5x5 floating around
 
did i read needsize you do 5x5 for compound movements, but do 3x10 for like "isolation" excercises, or supplemental excercises. I could be wrong.
 
I do some warm-up sets and then jump inot the 5X5..sometimes its 4X5 or 5X4,the point is to get to a high weight amount whereby its difficult to do 5X5..once I'm able to do a 5X5 relatively easily,I bump up the weight amount
