what would be the best fighting style for me

i am 6'4" 245 lbs, bf 15% and dropping. i have no experience with any martial art, but i do have a lot of punching power and wrestling skills. i am extremely agile especially for my size and i have good balance.

what are you interested in and what are you looking for? do you want a sport style? do you want something with tradition values and respect built in? do you just want to focus on self defense. are you concerned with getting a good workout in?

all these would help but what is most important in most peoples opinion is the quality of the instructor and how he runs the club. if that matches well with what you are looking for you should be good to go.

if you have some schools in your area in mind post them up

i was interested in muay thai for stiking ability, and bjj for ground grapleing.
i dont just want to learn the skills i also like the discipline, respect and values that goes with martial arts. i also would like the conditioning, not really for a work out beacuse i get enogh workout from weights and cardio. sry for asking so many questions.

check to see whats offered in your area

MT is definately great for striking but might not be offered in your area.. then look for boxing, kick boxing or again an instructor in your area who is very proficient at teaching the striking skills you are looking for

for grappling you probably want to look for any type of judo or jujitsu but def check out the class and see how it is run to see if it is what you are looking for.

dont worry abouthe the questions thats what the forum is for! we would rather you ask and learn then join a school that doesnt fit you.

if you can post up your location or area or something and someone here might no someone.. normally that is a Great way to find a club

if you have really good balance Judo would be tempting
only thing is with your height your center will be high so that will be a disadvantage
but boxing would be great for you

Don't overlook Tae Kwon Do - a good school not a minimall wannabe.
I am also tall (6'3") and found that TKD was great for developing long range weapons (hands & feet). Muay Thai is better for intermediate range and Ju Jitsu is the best for close quarters and grappling.

yeah i never discredit a single style and always tell people to look for the best instructor in the area.

kane: just an fyi there have been some great tall judoka's obviously they have there weakness but a good fighter will overcome that using his strengths (leverage, long reach)

yah it's not that you can't be good at Judo when your tall but there is a disadvantage there
same thing with a tall guy in the Clinch
there are tall guys who can Clinch well but if they were shorter they wouldnt have the troubles with leverage etc
like I"m only 5'10 so you'd think I'd have trouble fighting outside, but oddly I can fight pretty well on the outside (very well if you take into account my height disadvantage)

yup.

im a short guy but im working on improving my 'tall man throws' ... throws that rely on big sweeping type leg movements.

now i cant generate the same power as someone over 6ft tall but the advantage i will have is that people will not expect this from me so the element of suprise is on my side..

also i need to get more proficient at these techniques so i can help teach them better.. its one thing to know how to do it.. but if you can really show it and demonstrate it it is much better.. but to be hitting it in competition shows you really have it down.
