What the fuck is wrong with my computer?

from zero

New member
Ever since I installed some new virus-protection software (VirusScan 7.0 Professional), my shit has been crashing left and right. If I'm on Internet Explorer, 9 times out of 10, it will freeze and I'll have to ctrl-alt-del it. And then, maybe 40% of the time, I won't have to restart. Happens on AIM too. WTF is going on? Perhaps VirusScan 7 isn't working with Win 98?

Help me out bors.

When I was running 98, all was well until I started installing newer games or software onto it after 98 was on there a couple
of years...

Same thing with 2000 likely will happen in a year of so..

You can probably get a patch to get almost anything to run on NT
or 98, but why deal with a patch when 2000 is not that expensive now ?

Wish I could help you, home boy, but I'm a pretty ignorant son of a bitch when it comes to that computer stuff.

I'll drink a beer for you right at this very moment though. :D

I'm certain the problem is beween the chair and the keyboard. Let me know if you can find it.

Hey! How's life?

i wouldn't try to install XP on an old machine like yours broly....probably doesn't even meet the minimum system requirements.....

you need a new PC

and a lot of anti-virus apps can be a real pain in the ass......i'd go with Norton

FWIW, I've had better speed downloading from the newsgroups as of late. Might want to check and see if XP is on them right now.

Hey man, what's up?! :D Life is good. I'm still bouncing full time, and liking it. The hardest part of the job is stashing away the cash I get paid every night and not spending it. Well, that, and not drinking an overly insane amount. :elephant:

LOL... I'm actually getting in the gym more regularly than I was when I was working at the library. I'm cutting some fat off of my sorry ass and have taken my weight from 286 to 270 in five and a half weeks. It's a work in progress. I have another fifteen or twenty pounds to got until I'll be satisfied. I'm keeping my strength, though. Gotta have the strength. :)

How are you doing, man? Things going OK with ya?

Those last 20 lbs are gonna be a bitch with insane amounts of drinking :)

Myself, I'm doing good; wife, kids, cat, goldfish, puppy and work are keeping me mighty busy.

What are the best brands out there right now?

Maybe I'll build one. I know a friend who could help me out with that ...

Just buy a new P3 Motherboard with 256 min ram
and stick it in your current case.

Your HD is OK for now unless you store lots of stuff or the MB cant do IDE.

Then upgrade to XP

Good to hear you're doing A-OK. :garza:

As for the drinking, I'm actually not getting FUBARed as much as I may have made it sound like.

Although right now, I'm working on a bit of drunkenness. Really, it's been a shitty fucking night. I'm surprised I'm salvaging it to this extent, to be honest. :)

Bro, try uninstalling that virus scan7 bullshit and get Norton/Symantec. I told you this the other day. You did not get a firewall either did you?

You could have undetectable back doors on your system. If the root access has been compromised any number of small programs or "custom" programs can be run on your PC.

Remember the other day when you said "owned" to me about your pc issues? It seems you are being owned... hahahaha, no but seriously...

I suggested this the other day. Try installing Norton Internet Security 2003 Pro. It has virus and easy to manage firewall. It will ask you every time something tries to connect for the first time...if word or a pdf document or something is trying to access the internet which seems weird - say no and deny the module to access the web. If the problem persists you will need to upgrade the OS or just wipe the hard drive and reinstall the current OS to fix the problem...

Maybe this issue will slow your post count down... j/k

Good Luck

I've used compaq's for several years at work. They're fine.

I mean you get what you pair for but if you don't need a high end lo-g machine then don't waste your money. If you need high end graphics and what not then I suggest you build one at an online store through http://www.pricewatch.com (thanks to nodaddyno) and go from there.

A big question is.... what do you do with your computer? Gaming, or just surfing, chat and email?

It's just basically the family PC. Internet use, Cd burning, AIM, etc. Nothing special. Which is why I was thinking about building something cheap, but reliable.

Yudbrolybroly, I've known about pricewatch.com for a long time, but thanks bor.

If you aren't a gamer who needs high end performance, you can build yourself a computer for might cheap prices - especially if you re-use your old CD burner, case, etc.

You might even want to buy a used one off of ebay - they are pretty cheap there.

Saga..... from a phonetic standpoint, you're just about spot-on. :D I'm feeling pretty soggy (get it? saga.... soggy? LOL) from all the friggin' beer I'm quaffing.

At least I'm not staring at a DWI like my friend is. Damn, that shit sucks.

How you been doing, ya freak? :D

LOL.... then I be a sandwich eatin' muddafucka today.

Actually, I'm fighting a shit mood. I really don't feel like hanging out by myself right now. This is one of the few times I wish I had a chick here with me.

LMAO... the last time I got laid was sometime in May. Is that not some crazy shit or what? I've turned down many an opportunity, believe it or not. I mention that to some of the guys I work with and they're incredulous. I'm trying to think of it as a Zen mastery at this point, or something like that.

Sheeee-it! :D

do what Y-lifter said....new MB and processor - i just got an Athalon 1.7GHZ and a MB for about 200 bucks, get 512MB of ram that'll cost maybe 100.....and get a new Hard drive, it'll make a big difference i the speed, plus they are cheap now too.

go to www.newegg.com

if you need any help, I can tell you what I think is a good deal.

This is obviously, as we like to say in the computer industry, a DFU problem.

BTW - DFU stands for Dumb Fucking User.

jnuts was pretty helpful thru PMs (thanks again bor) and sent me this link:

I'm probably gonna keep my mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers, cd drive, and burner.
