Im coming off of a shoulder surgery, so I havent been able to work out in any capacity, but Im going to start a mixed martial arts class (BJJ, Muay Thai) and I want to get in shape before I take the class, because it is very strenous (2 1/2 hours). Im 28 and I dont think jumping into a class like that without preparing is the best thing to do. Any martial artists here have any suggestions?

Running sounds good. I wanted to see if I could get any cardio ideas related do martial arts.

in addition to the running, hit the situps, hindu squats (aka jump squats) and pushups (if you can do). if you can only do 10, start from there and up it every 3-4 days. plenty of stretching too.

i'm doing Judo, graplling, muay thai, and hapkido. start slow bro. don't over do it and obviously expect a little soreness in the beginning.

hope this was helpful !

tai-bo--overall good cardio workout plus you throw punches, knees etc. helped me get in shape for toughman contest. of course any regular cardio will do just fine-->walking, running, eliptical rider. good luck bro.

Agreed, take one of those taebo or cardiokickboxing classes at your gym. If you'll probably be the only straight guy (assuming you are) in a room of like 50 girls... and it's functional cardio.

Out of curiosity, WHERE THE HELL do you take a class like that? It's like a dream come true for me... I have to take my Muay Thai class at 10am in the morning and then drive all across fuckin' LA to take my BJJ or Krav Maga or whatever class like 3 hours later, which sucks.

Is that how MMA gyms usually teach their classes? Cuz that's sweet.

Im in Austin, the guy who runs this gym is the only guy in town that I know that offers Muay Thai and BJJ in the same class. The schedule is Muay thai at 7-8p, BJJ 8-9p
M-TH=classes
Sat= Open gym
total cost/month= 80$
This guy kicks ass
