Over my lifetime as a trainer and helper to many of the top names in fitness and bodybuilding, I have seen the same misconception about food with every person I meet. It seems as though it has been ingrained in us by our society that certain foods are BETTER than other foods because they contain less calories/sugar/fat. However, this is completely unfounded and is comparable to the food pyramid that was offered by the government. Consider, for example, a 5oz. plain bagel with 2 ½ oz. cream cheese, sounds MUCH healthier than a Big-Mack, doesn’t it? Well, not necessarily; in fact, the Bagel with Cream cheese contains about 640-650 calories which is 50 calories more than a Big-Mac. Here’s another example to show you how mythical people’s ideas about dieting are: 8oz. (that’s a small cup) of orange juice contains about the same amount of calories as 2 oranges – but is usually loaded with preservatives as a toping on the cake. Keep in mind, I am not advocating the consumption of Big-Macs in lieu of real food, but what I’m suggesting is that our deeply ingrained concepts of right vs. wrong when it comes to food are unfounded and, better yet, unsupported by full scientific proof.

Now, you ask: Can I eat a lot of tasty food and get away w/ it while dieting? My answer: YES! Let’s look at this example; one raspberry tart is equal to 8 cups of raspberries with whipped toping. In addition, 1 scone has the SAME amount of calories as a bowl of oatmeal with peaches plus and English muffin with jam plus a bowl of cornflakes with banana plus two slices of light toast with marmalade plus a bowl of orange and pineapple slices. HOW IS THAT for a misconception about food? In this case, you could have EATEN ALL THAT FOOD instead of 1 scone.

So, the moral of the story is: don’t believe what everyone tells you and especially what society has ingrained in you. After many years of fitness experience, I can say first hand that fallacies run rampant in this industry, so please research before you jump on the bandwagon.
