As mother to pre-teen children I am HORRIFIED at the clothing that is being made... All of my children have "back" - and it is unnerving to say the least. I recently took my kids on a shopping trip (their father has been too busy to buy any of them clothing for the last year) and bought them as many outfits as I could afford. My oldest is on the cusp of puberty. She is as big as I am and even though she doesn't have a woman's body yet, because of her height and ample bootay she looks much older and is very self-conscious.
Whatever clothing her father provides is TOTALLY inappropriate. So we got her some stuff that was nice and stylish and made her look pretty.
We had her look in the mirror and told her, "Darlin' you shouldn't wear an outfit that will hide who you are, but only something that will let YOU show through!" Meaning, her clothing shouldn't be ALL that is looked at... Once she is old enough to handle that sort of attention, it will be her option. But until then I want her to realize that there is so much more to her than her body or what is adorning it.
We walk a thin line with the messages we convey to our daughters. On the one hand I don't want her to feel ashamed or that she has to cover her body up. But on the other hand I want her to understand there is a time and a place for everything.
The smile on her face when she saw her reflection told me she "got it".
Me, I don't mind wearing short skirts or lowrise pants if that is what I want to wear... but generally those occasions are getting fewer and farther between. I don't go to clubs or bars and I never make it passed a first date so my more provacative stuff sits in the closet collecting dust.
Even when I do wear a short skirt,my top is then covered. If I have cleavage showing then the rest is covered. It is like I pic ONE THING to show of and camouflage the rest leaving something to the imagination.
