Was looking at competition bench clips, and ...

... their grip is wide. In one of the links up at the sticky.

So which is better a wider grip or a closer one?

Find the most powerful grip for you....eventually if you are competing in pl you will want a wider grip so as to shorten the lockout. I still use a somewhat narrow grip for someone of my height, middle fingers on the ring

Depends on your personal preference.

Just because a certain grip works for someone else does not mean that it will work for you.

experiment experiment and practice practice.

I bench pinky on the ring...you would take a wider grip with a bench shirt on and to lower the ROM...

here is a great example of what everyone's saying. B fold is about 6'2 and im 5'10 and we bench with our hands in the same spot.

I however bench as wide as is legally allowed, and I am five eight(ish).

Index on the rings for me. My training partner, tho goes pinkie or ring finger on the rings, even in a shirt. Each to his own.

I know Bill Carpenter and Jason Keene both of whom have benched 600+ at 242 or under both use pinkies on rings, but Kenny Patterson and George Halbert, both of whom are 700+ at 242 or under go index on the rings, so who can say what is best across the board?

B.

P.S. I think tho that in a shirt, wider is better. . . across the board.

Height wouldn't have anything to do with it.

I go wide to decrease rang of motion...I have very long arms. For me, the difference between a close grip bench and a index-on-the-rings bench is 6 inches. That's 6 fewer inchest I have to bench; 12 roundtrip! ;)

This would make sense....in a shirt you don't need quite as much power off the bottom. I don't go out that far because I have a hard time keeping tight and getting a good base with my index on the rings....but that is raw. With the shirt on My lats are squeezed into position regardless..lol

I do the flat bench to ade in my overhead press (tricep strength) so most of my flat pressing with with pointer on smooth, pointer 1" from smooth, and then some with pinky on rings.

Get me in a shirt and at a contest...I'll do whatever it takes to put up bigger numbers...
