volume training

Sorry that I posted a training issue on this board, but I thought I would get better answers this way. I have started doing a lot of volume in my training, ie, 8 sets of bench, 8 sets of incline db, 8 sets of overhead press, etc. I pyramid up to a weight with which I can only do 3 reps. I then do that weight for 3 sets before pyramiding back down. Whenever I lift like this I always give my muscles a good thrashing and can barely move my shoulders when I'm down. A guy in the gym, however, (he's been around for awhile) told me that he heard that training the way that I am will burn me out quickly and that more than one or two weeks of it will be overtraining. I heard that powerlifters do a lot of volume. So is it ok to continue training like this for a few months, or should I only do it every so often?

Thanks

Powerlifters do not train with high volume, but they train specifically for strength. I don't think there's anything wrong with doing 8 sets of a particular movement, but how many sets are you doing total for the workout?

What you should do is try alot of different things and see how they work for you.

thanks genarr I have tried a lot of things and I think I get my best workouts this way...but my muscles stay sore for like 6 days I've heard that that is bad...total sets per workout is probably 19 per bodypart

19 total sets per workout? That's not overtraining. I usually do 20 - 22 total for workout.

I like it when my muscles are sore for long periods, let's me know I got my work in.

are you kidding me? that many sets per part no way hit it with less volume more frequency and move movements less of each. It has been shown in studies that there is little difference after the first set nevermind the regular 3. Look for hst by bryan Haycock his article point out the ref's. I'm trying his training now but it sticks to what I've thought and gives it proof. Again I do not back this training yet but the principles ring true and adopted to a regualr training style you can see that 8 sets of any one movement is way to much rather do 2 sets of 5-6 different movements per body part
