volume training

Sorry that I posted a training issue on this board, but I thought I would get better answers this way. I have started doing a lot of volume in my training, ie, 8 sets of bench, 8 sets of incline db, 8 sets of overhead press, etc. I pyramid up to a weight with which I can only do 3 reps. I then do that weight for 3 sets before pyramiding back down. Whenever I lift like this I always give my muscles a good thrashing and can barely move my shoulders when I'm down. A guy in the gym, however, (he's been around for awhile) told me that he heard that training the way that I am will burn me out quickly and that more than one or two weeks of it will be overtraining. I heard that powerlifters do a lot of volume. So is it ok to continue training like this for a few months, or should I only do it every so often?

the technique which power or weight lifters use is called GVT or gferman volume training. and it is doing 10 sets of same exercise with same weight with 60-90 second rest. weight should be what u can lift for 16-20 reps in first fresh set. sets should be no less and no more. see www.t-mag.com for detailed article
