VITAMIN C for CORTISOL SUPPRESSION

I have heard some good and bad things about adding a few extra grams of Vitamin C to my supplement regimen. I have heard in some cases it can be incredible for increasing the testosterone:cortisol ratio.

Excerpts from:
Vitamin C Lowers Cortisol: Testosterone Ratio
by Bruce J. Ketchum

A new study stengthens the argument that
vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is helpful for
lowering cortisol. It was shown by
Marsit and colleagues that vitamin C
may alter the hormonal response to
weight training in a manner that may
create a more anabolic environment.

Members of the U.S. Junior Elite
Olympic Weightlifting squad
participated in a 16-day high-volume,
high-intensity pre-competition training
period. Training sessions were
performed daily, and many days had
multiple training sessions. Half the
lifters received 1,000 mg of vitamin C
daily and half a placebo. The hormonal
response to a standard testing session
consisting of clean and jerks, snatch
pulls and back squats, before and after
the training camp was examined.

The lifters taking the vitamin C
supplementation showed a lower
cortisol response to the standard
weightlifting session at the end of the
camp, compared to the lifters taking the
placebo. No difference in the
testosterone or testosterone cortisol ratio
was shown in the lifters taking the
placebo.

serum cortisol and testosterone:cortisol
ratio in junior elite weightlifters. J.
