VETERANS DAY :The Things They Wrote

NEW YORK TIMES

A year ago the Op-Ed page marked Veterans Day by publishing excerpts from letters written home by soldiers who lost their lives in Iraq. At the time, fewer than 400 Americans had died in Operation Iraqi Freedom. This year Veterans Day takes place during the battle for the Iraqi city of Falluja, where at least 11 Americans have been killed this week. Since the beginning of the war, the number of American dead in Iraq, according to the Pentagon(which is incorrect the number is actually much higher) stands at 1,149. Thousands more have been wounded.

Below are passages from letters sent this year by men and women, now dead, to their families in the United States.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Excerpts from letters to his parents from Pfc. Moisés A. Langhorst of the Marines. Private Langhorst, 19, of Moose Lake, Minn., was killed in Al Anbar Province on April 6 by small-arms fire.

March 13

As far as my psychological health, we look out for each other pretty well on that. ... I've been praying a lot and I hope you're praying for the Dirty 3rd Platoon, because there is no doubt that we are in the Valley of the Shadow of Death.

March 15

After standing in the guard tower for seven-and-a-half hours this morning, we went on our first platoon-size patrol from about 1200 to 1700. It was exhausting, but it went very well. I had to carry the patrol pack with emergency chow, a poncho and night vision goggles. That's what really wore me out.

We toured the mosques and visited the troublesome abandoned train station. The people were friendly, and flocks of children followed us everywhere.

When I called you asked me if Iraq is what I expected, and it really is. It looks just like it does on the news. It hardly feels like a war, though. Compared to the wars of the past, this is nothing. We're not standing on line in the open - facing German machine guns like the Marines at Belleau Wood or trying to wade ashore in chest-deep water at Tarawa. We're not facing hordes of screaming men at the frozen Chosun Reservoir in Korea or the clever ambushes of Vietcong. We deal with potshots and I.E.D.'s. With modern medicine my chances of dying are slim to none and my chances of going home unscathed are better than half. Fewer than 10 men in my company have fired their weapons in the 10 days we've been here.

March 24

While not always pleasant, I know this experience is good for me. It makes me appreciate every little blessing God gives me, especially the family, friends and home I left behind in Moose Lake.

Excerpt from an e-mail message to her cousin on his wedding day from Sgt. First Class Linda Ann Tarango-Griess of the Army. Sergeant Tarango-Griess, 33, of Sutton, Neb., was killed on July 11 in Samarra by an improvised explosive device.

May 14

So today is your big day? Wow! It seems like just yesterday that I was making you peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and Malt-O-Meal. We experienced a lot together as we grew up and for the life of me, I can't think of a time that you and I never got along. IS THAT NORMAL?

I never thought I would see the day that you settle down and get married, but here you are. You couldn't have picked a more wonderful person than Rachel. She is very sweet, very giving and most important, she loves you. Be good to her. I am sorry I can't be there to share in your day, but here I am in hopes that one day, these people will have the chance to be as happy as you. Just know that I AM with you ... just close your eyes, place your hands on your heart, and you will feel me there.

Excerpts from letters to his 2-year-old son and his wife from Sgt. Christopher Potts of the Army. Sergeant Potts, 38, of Tiverton, R.I., was killed on Oct. 3 in Taji by small-arms fire.

January

Hi my big guy. How are you? I miss you bad. I miss things like you calling for me in the morning when you hear me in the kitchen, or when you come home at the end of the day. I also miss cooking for you and Mom. But most of all I miss your big hugs. I enjoy hearing your voice on the phone and seeing the pictures you draw for me. I'm sorry for not writing you till now. But the days are very long here, and we only get about four-and-a-half hours sleep a night. I got up a little early to write this because I know you need your own letter too.

March 18

Hi my love. Well, where should I start? First we left Kuwait after being issued a combat load of ammo - M-16 ammo, grenades, smoke grenades, grenade-launcher ammo and C-4. I knew that night that this is for real. Some people paced, some people slept, some of us had to write the just-in-case letters, some just sat. The letter-writing was a real hard thing to do, it definitely makes you aware of the situation and your life. But you'll never have to read it - unless you want to when I get home. It's weird because I'm not afraid of what might happen, or the pain of it. I'm just afraid of not being able to see you again.

The first leg of the trip through the desert was really bad. There were children of all ages from God knows where begging for food and water. The dust was blowing all over them, and some had torn outgrown clothes, and some were barefoot. I looked over at my driver and we were both crying after a few miles. I said to him, You know, this is why I'm here, so that my kids won't ever have to live like that. Then we just drove in silence for a while.

As we got closer to Baghdad you could see blown-up military equipment, ours and theirs. People were on the side of the road selling gasoline out of plastic jugs. There was diesel and fuel spilled everywhere ... then you'd see some slaughtered lambs on the side of the road. The meat is hanging out in the sun and dirt and germ-infested air. Farther down the road there were people bathing and washing up. Other people were picking through garbage.

I hope today I can call. I miss you so much that as I write this part my eyes are running. The TV in the mess hall said you got snow yesterday. I wish I was there to shovel. I hope you are being taken care of.

I'm so proud for our troops that voluntarily are defending our Freedom while we build this country and others spend time attacking our government. Thanks God we have Mr. Bush as president. With him our troops have all the support they need. Not like kerry that betrayed his own friends in Vietnam. What a coward.

Late January, 1969 Kerry joined his 5 man crew on PCF-94

Late January through
Early March, 1969 Starting in late January 1969, this crew completed 18 missions over an intense and dangerous 48 days, almost all of them in the dense jungles of the Mekong Delta. Kerry's crew included engineman Eugene Thorson, later an Iowa cement mason; David Alston, then the crew's only African-American and today a minister in South Carolina; petty officer Del Sandusky of Illinois; rear gunner and quartermaster Michael Medeiros of California; and the late Tom Belodeau, who joined the crew fresh out of Chelmsford High School in Massachusetts. Others rotated in and out of the crew. The most intense action came during an extraordinary eight days of more than 10 firefights, remembered by Kerry's crew as the "days of hell."

February 20, 1969 Kerry and crew involved in combat; Kerry receives second combat injury – Kerry earned his second Purple Heart after sustaining a shrapnel wound in his left thigh.

February 28, 1969 For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Coastal Division ELEVEN engaged in armed conflict with Viet Cong insurgents in An Xuyen Province, Republic of Vietnam, on 28 February 1969. Lieutenant (junior grade) Kerry was serving as Officer in Charge of Patrol Craft Fast 94 and Officer in Tactical Command of a three-boat mission. As the force approached the target area on the narrow Dong Cung River, all units came under intense automatic weapons and small arms fire from an entrenched enemy force less than fifty-feet away. Unhesitatingly, Lieutenant (junior grade) Kerry ordered his boat to attack as all units opened fire and beached directly in front of the enemy ambushers. The daring and courageous tactic surprised the enemy and succeeded in routing a score of enemy soldiers. The PCF gunners captured many enemy weapons in the battle that followed. On a request from U.S. Army advisors ashore, Lieutenant (junior grade) Kerry ordered PCFs 94 and 23 further up river to suppress enemy sniper fire. After proceeding approximately eight hundred yards, the boats again were taken under fire from a heavily foliated area and B-40 rocket exploded close aboard PCF-94; with utter disregard for his own safety and the enemy rockets, he again ordered a charge on the enemy, beached his boat only ten feet from the VC rocket position, and personally led a landing party ashore in pursuit of the enemy. Upon sweeping the area an immediate search uncovered an enemy rest and supply area which was destroyed. The extraordinary daring and personal courage of Lieutenant (junior grade) Kerry in attacking a numerically superior force in the face of intense fire were responsible for the highly successful mission. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

March 13, 1969 For heroic achievement while serving with Coastal Division ELEVEN engaged in armed conflict with Viet Cong communist aggressors in An Xuyen Province, Republic of Vietnam, on 13 March 1969. Lieutenant (junior grade) Kerry was serving as Officer in Charge of Patrol Craft Fast 94, one of five boats conducting a SEA Lords operation in the Bay Hap River. While exiting the river, a mine detonated under another Inshore Patrol Craft and almost simultaneously, another mine detonated wounding Lieutenant (junior grade) Kerry in the right arm. In addition, all units began receiving small arms and automatic weapons fire from the river banks. When Lieutenant (junior grade) Kerry discovered he had a man overboard, he returned upriver to assist. The man in the water was receiving sniper fire from both banks. Lieutenant (junior grade) Kerry directed his gunners to provide suppressing fire, while from an exposed position on the bow, his arm bleeding and in pain and with disregard for his safety, he pulled the man aboard. Lieutenant (junior grade) Kerry then directed his boat to return and assist the other damaged boat to safety. Lieutenant (junior grade) Kerry’s calmness, professionalism and great personal courage under fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. Lieutenant (junior grade) Kerry is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.

March 17, 1969 The policy of Coastal Squadron One, the swift boat command, was to send home any individual who is wounded three times in action. After sustaining his third wound from enemy action in Vietnam, Kerry was granted relief under this policy.

Early April, 1969 Kerry departs Vietnam

April 11, 1969 Kerry reports for duty at the Military Sea Transportation Service, U.S. Atlantic Fleet in Brooklyn, NY.
January 1, 1970 Kerry promoted to (full) Lieutenant

January 3, 1970 Kerry requests discharge

March 1, 1970 Kerry’s date of separation from Active Duty

April 29, 1970 Kerry listed as Registrant who has completed service

JOHN F. KERRY's pearls

RESIDENCE:
7 mansions, including Washington DC, worth multi-millions

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Law Enforcement:
I voted to cut every law enforcement, CIA and defense
bill in my career as a US Senator. I ordered Boston City
Hall to remove a fire hydrant in front of my mansion,
thereby endangering my neighbors in the event of fire.

Military:
I used three minor injuries to get an early discharge
from the military and service in Vietnam. I then returned
to the US, joined
Jane Fonda in protesting the war, and insulted returning Vietnam vets, claiming they committed atrocities and were baby killers. I threw my medals, ribbons, or something away in protest. Or did I? My book "Vietnam Veterans Against the War: The New Soldier" shows how I truly feel about the military.

College:
I graduated from Yale University with a low C average.
Unlike my opponent George Bush, I have no higher education
and did not get admitted to Harvard nor graduate with an
M.B.A.

PAST WORK EXPERIENCE:
I ran for U.S. Congress and have been there ever since.
I have no real world experience except marrying rich women
and running HJ Heinz vicariously through my wife Teresa.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS U.S. SENATOR:

I set the record for the most liberal voting record,
exceeding even Ted Kennedy and Hillary Clinton. I have consistently failed to support our military and CIA by voting against budgets, thus gutting our country's ability to defend itself. Although I voted for the Iraq War, now I am against it and refuse to admit that I voted for it.

I voted for every liberal piece of legislation. I have
no plan to help this country but I intend to raise taxes significantly if I am elected.

My wealth so far exceeds that of my counterpart, George
Bush. I make no or little charitable contributions and
have never agreed to pay any voluntary excess taxes in MA, despite family wealth in excess of $700 million.

Although I claim to be in favor of alternative energy
sources, Ted Kennedy and I oppose windmills off Nantucket
and Martha's Vineyard as it might spoil our view of the
ocean as we cruise on our yachts.

RECORDS AND REFERENCES:
None.

PERSONAL
I ride a Serotta Bike.
My Gulfstream V Jet I call "The Flying Squirrel ".
I call my $ 850,000 42 foot Hinckley twin diesel yacht the "Scaramouche". I am fascinated by rap and hip-hop and you had better listen to it as it reflects our real culture. I own several SUVs including one parked at my Nantucket's summer mansion, though I am against large polluting inefficient vehicles and blame George Bush for the energy problems.

PLEASE CONSIDER MY EXPERIENCE WHEN VOTING IN 2004.

Who says that?
that cheap website?
I could do something better with a different web name. If democrats read things like that no wonder they lost the elections...

country under the Democrats:
1. Economy prospers, crime is down, abortions are down, teenage pregnencies are down, and even drug use is down. Clinton, however, very concerned about the "growing threat of terrorism".

2. Clinton dismantles military. Orders 52 tactical aircraft in 2001, as opposed to Bush's 58 in 2002. Orders 6 new naval ships in 2001, as opposed to Bush's 5 in 2002. Clinton upgrades missiles to JDAMs, from 10% under HW Bush to 70%.

3. Military is so dismantled it prompts Lawrence J. Korb, director of national secuirty studies at the Council of Foreign Relations, after invading Iraq to say "The fact of the matter is that most of the credit for the successful military operation should go to the Clinton Admnistration."

4. Paul Bremer on Clinton: "he correctly focused on bin Laden". "Overall, I give him very high remarks" - Robert Oakley, a Reagan counterterrorism official. August 3rd Bush says "If called on by the commander in chief today, two entire divisions of the Army would have to report, "Not ready for duty, sir.". Proceed to kick the crap out of Afghanistan in late September.

5. 38 days after taking office, WTC is attacked for the first time. Clinton captures and imprisons Ramzi Yousef, Abdul Hakim Murad, and Wali Khan Amin Shah. Doesn't even need to invade Iraq to do it.

6. Clinton's administration thwarts plans to kill the pope and blow up 12 US jetliners simultaneously, in addition to the attack against the UN headquaters, the FBI building, the Israeli embassy, the LA and Boston airports, the Lincoln and Holland tunnels, and the GW bridge.

7. His 1st crime bill contained stringent anti-terrorism legislation, as did the second - also sponsored simulated terrorist attacks to see how the cities would respond.

8. Clinton issues a directive authorizing assination of Osama Bin Laden

9. Instead of funding and arming terrorists like Reagan, or ignoring them like Bush Sr., Clinton puts Clarke in charge of dismantling them. As a senior Bush administrator put it it, it was "everything we've done since 9/11."

10. "A commander in chief leads the military built by those who came before him. There is little that he or his defense secretary can do to improve the force they have to deploy. It is all the work of previous administrations. Decisions made today shape the force of tomorrow... and when that war (1st gulf) ended, the first thing I did was to place a call to California and say thank you to President Ronald Reagan."
-Dick Cheney

Bush admnistration not so thankful to Clinton for Iraq and Afghanistan.

And now the Bush Administration:

1. Fights all of Clinton's counterterrorism spending. "The administration would be wise to utilize the resources Congress has already provided before it requests additional funding." -Orin Hatch on Clinton requesting more funds to fight terrorism

2. Republicans object to Clinton's proposed expansion of the intelligence agencies wiretap authority. "When you have an agency that turns 900 personnel files over to people like Craig Livingstone... it's very hard to justify giving the agency more power." -Newt Gingrich

3. On bombing targets on Sudan and Afghanistan - "The President did exactly the right thing. By doing this we're sending the signal there are no sancturies for terrorists." -Newt Gingrich

4. When George W. takes office, Sandy Berger briefs Condi Rice on al Queda(who then lies about this meeting, and upon getting caught, admits to having it).

5. Richard Clarke lays out the whole Clinton al Queda plan, Condi likes him so much she decides he should stay.

6. Outgoing Clinton officials say "The Bush team thinks we're obsessed with terrorism".

7. Bush and Rummy, not really interested in fighting terrorism, start funding programs like missile defense (star wars). Yeah. Missile defense.

8. Feb 15th, Hart-Rudman issue a report that "mass casualty terrorism directed against the US homeland was of serious and growing concern". Recommends a National Homeland Security Agency.

9. April 30th, Clarke presents plan to fight al Queda and to start a National Homeland Security Agency. Gets floated around the office, ignored. June 10th, FBI agent sends headquarters a memo concerning some middle eastern students learning to fly who have no interest in taking off or landing.

10. Mid July, the threat of terrorism making him very anxious, George Tenet tells Condi that a major attack on American soil is imminent.

11. Bush administration finally looks at Clarke's plan in mid July, but the president is on vaction (where he is 43% of the time). It will have to wait until September.

12. George Tenet delivers Bush a memo entitled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.", saying al Queda is planning on hijacking planes. No one follows up the memo. The next day, while on vacation, Bush tells the press "I've got a lot of national secuirty concerns that we're working on - Iraq, Macedonia, very worrisome right now."

13. August 16, INS arrests Moussaoui, saying he's "the type of person who could fly something into the World Trade Center." Now if only we had that Department of Homeland Security to analyize this it might have reminded them of a plan Clinton thwarted in 1996 to fly a plane into the CIA headquarters.

14. August 25th. Bush still on vaction. Clark's memo of fighting terrorism still sitting around, waiting for his attention. Bush tells press "Spot's a good runner. You know, Barney-terriers are bred to go into holes and pull out varmint. And Spotty chases birds. Spotty's a great water dog. I'll go fly fishing this afternoon on my lake." He does.

15. Feeling the heat in August about this "imminent terrorist attack", acting FBI director Thomas Pickard requests an additional 58$ million from the justice department, which John Ashcroft denies. Pickard wanted this money to train new agents, get some translators, and improve intelligence. On September 10th, Pickard receives Ashcroft's official letter denying the funds.

16. 8 months after Rice had been briefed, and 11 months after Clinton told him to create it, Clark's plan finally reaches the Principals Comittee. Bush is back from vacation. Cheney, Rice, Powell, and Rumsfeld decide to advise Bush to adopt Clarke's plan with a phased in approach. They wait several days before they put it on his desk.

17. September 9th - Congress proposes boosting anti terrorism by 600$ million, taking money from the missile defense system. It gets threatened with a presidential veto.

18. September 10th, Ashcroft sends budget request to Bush. Includes spending increases in 68 different programs. 0 deal with terrorism. Ashcroft passes around a memo of his 7 top priorities, again terrorism isn't on the list.

19. September 11th - ...unpreventable?

20. Clinton's "defunct, cut, non-battle ready military" kicks the crap out of Afghanistan. Proceeds to do the same in Iraq (which, incidentially, had nothing to do with September 11th.)

Damn the domocrat that wrote that has a lot of time. Probably he's unemployed and living from the benefits.

If you don't know how to respond, then why don't you just admit it? And if you're going to sound ignorant, at least spell "democrat" correctly so that you don't look stupid at the same time. Considering you have such difficulty piecing together coherent sentences, I doubt you'd have much to offer in terms of a rebuttal.

Yeah, and under clinton the cia is gutted, our intelligence capabilities are gutted, our military is gutted, the big corps lie, cheat, steal, artificially inflate profits to artificially raise the stock market, clinton allows 18 soldiers to be butchered in Somolia, then pulls us out further making a mockery of their deaths, refuses to arrest bin laden on several occasions,
commits adultery, fornication, etc while on the clock with tax payers money, violating every sexual harrasment law in existence, gets away with it.

Hmm, John Kerry, disgraces uniform, disgraces his country attends meetings with our enemies, does have the most liberal voting record (at least when he does vote) please,

If it weren't for the true vets and current military we wouldn't be having this discussion because we wouldn't have the freedoms to do so.
