what happens if one person wants out of the relationship, does it all fall apart?

that would be up to them. The general rule would be if one person wants out then usually their partner will leave as well. 4 single, 1 maried couple + 2 single people or combinations similar will simply not work well. It will take 2 married couples for optimal performace.
