From web page:

About the same time that L-tryptophan was removed from the market for human consumption, prescription antidepressants known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's) began to emerge. These SSRI's were touted as a revolution in the correction of Serotonin Deficiency Syndrome.

Do you think that maybe someone purposely contaminated that batch of Showadenko tryptophan?
Information like this could lead one to that conclusion.

Its not like they planned it out, like in the movies, some may. They probably just get pressure to do this, and try to do the best at hiding it, and making their own employees believe it is bad. Why haven't they lifted that ban, From what I head it was very clear that contamination was the only issue.

With PPA, I thought there was a lot of studies showing that it can cause stroke, and was well known. But why did they do it out of the blue sky in fall of 2000?

Both substances are safe if used correctly, but you can say that for just about everything.

Also, I thought GHB was some horrifying drug, that would kill you or leave you in a coma for the rest of your life, and is used to date rape. I guess they forgot to tell you what dose those people in the stories were using. But according to sources, the FDA has recently approved GHB for use as a sleep aid, attainable through a prescription from your doctor. If I mentioned GHB in any positive way in public I would probably be crucified because of all the lies and stigma that circulates. People don't even want to analyze these days. They'll use " shut up its a drug, theres no explaining to do" for a defense, and thats the end of the story.

you can still get it in some places on the internet i forgot the sites, but a few people used it for losing weight and said it was great. Some say they even had to lower doseages b/c they were losing weight too fast.

It's never been illegal. It just can't be marketed anymore for human consumption. You won't find it in GNC or the likes.

Nevermind, I just looked at that site and found the following:

The contaminated batch contained over 60 different bacterial contaminants, and many folks who were taking large doses of 4000 mg or more per day of the tainted product got sick, and some even died of the bacterial toxins. The FDA issued a voluntary recall of all L-Tryptophan, not knowing that the tainted material came from Showa Denko. In a well-intentioned move, the FDA then announced an import restriction on all tryptophan except for pharmaceutical-grade L-Tryptophan meant for baby formulas, intravenous-feeding solutions, animal use and prescribed medical uses. So in other words, L-Tryptophan was still legal to buy, but it had become almost impossible to find. Up to that time the US tryptophan market had totaled some $60,000,000 per year. It was just a few weeks after the import restrictions, though, when the depression patients, orthomolecular psychiatric patients, and chronic insomniacs really began missing their L-Tryptophan that Prozac was given a major public-relations and advertising push.

tryptophan was a great substance my dad used to take it he said it used to put him to sleep got him lean and even saw some muscle growth due to increased gh from sleep

It was something of a conspiracy because after the FDA found out the root cause of the problem, which resulted from the contamination, they still kept the L-tryptophan banned from Joe Public The FDA and big pharm company's are in bed all over the place. Let's hope there is never any contaminated Vitamin C that hits the market or its ass will be banned, too

Booger, Thanks for the addy to order Tryptophan, I just put it on my shopping list but was not sure were to get it. I sent some karma your way!

Rocket

Were in MD you from. I grew up in Cumberland but moved away in 1978.

the reason why it got banned because its safer more effective then drugs like prozac but theres realy no money in tryptophan and the fda is a all boys club and btw like last year the fda made it available through a doc prescription but at liek 5 bucks a capsule

Jessup

And for Mighty P. I take about 4 grams once a week just before bed. It puts me in a virtual coma for about 4 hours. Really relaxing.

5-HTP is far better than L-tryp ever was.

L-tryp is sort of a precrusor to 5-HTP, which is a precursor to seratonin.

5-HTP is a step closer, and better.

Go lightly with it though.

the difference between L-Tryptophan and Prozac is that there are patents on Prozac (= Fluoxetine)

BTW 5-HTP is a good alternative to L-tryptophan

5-Hydroxytryptophan:
a clinically-effective serotonin precursor
by Birdsall TC

Altern Med Rev 1998 Aug; 3(4):271-80

ABSTRACT
5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is the intermediate metabolite of the essential amino acid L-tryptophan (LT) in the biosynthesis of serotonin. Intestinal absorption of 5-HTP does not require the presence of a transport molecule, and is not affected by the presence of other amino acids; therefore it may be taken with meals without reducing its effectiveness. Unlike LT, 5-HTP cannot be shunted into niacin or protein production. Therapeutic use of 5-HTP bypasses the conversion of LT into 5-HTP by the enzyme tryptophan hydroxylase, which is the rate-limiting step in the synthesis of serotonin. 5-HTP is well absorbed from an oral dose, with about 70 percent ending up in the bloodstream. It easily crosses the blood-brain barrier and effectively increases central nervous system (CNS) synthesis of serotonin. In the CNS, serotonin levels have been implicated in the regulation of sleep, depression, anxiety, aggression, appetite, temperature, sexual behaviour, and pain sensation. Therapeutic administration of 5-HTP has been shown to be effective in treating a wide variety of conditions, including depression, fibromyalgia, binge eating associated with obesity, chronic headaches, and insomnia.

I've been using Bios Tryptophan, 2.5g a night. Good stuff. 5-HTP is chemically inferior by the way. Its not as good.

The Media has really been hitting hard on supplements lately, in the news, in TV programs, and movies etc. number one on their hit list of late is Ephedra / ephedrin (ma huang) when the drug companies want to get something off the market i guess they have their ways, after all, they do advertise a lot dont they...
its not hard to do,

If someone dies from a commercial drug (in the tens of thousands a year) its because:

the patient was suffering from "other" complications.
the victim, abused his subscription.
the victim was combining his medication with others.
or consumed booze
the patient used herbal supplements without consent.

and any other excuse they can come up with, but they wont pull
the drug.

When someone dies from some supplement like ephedra: (a few dozen a year)

You here no mention that:

The victim was using excessive amounts 10 to 20 times what is normally used.

The Victim was using the supplement with other drugs and alcohol.

That the victim had other medical problems.

If i went to the store and bought a box of sudafed with (suedo ephedrine) and kick the bucket by swollowing all the pills in the box, it would be reported, that some guy died by overdose.

If I take a overdose of Ma Huang (ephedra) it willbe reported, man dies from consumption of dangerous herbal stimulant.

The drug manufacturers dont like the competition, and will do anything to get them off the ,market or even better, get it off the market, then find the active component then patent it themselves.

remember ulcers? people were taking tagamet perpetually to get rid of the suffering, then it was discovered that it could be cured! the tagamet folks tried to prevent this info from hitting the public, in other words, they would prefer people to suffer and they make money, then to have them live free of agony. did you notice how tagamet, a once expensive subscription drug is now over the counter as an anti acid?

Drug companies dont want to cure anything, they will not search for any cures, what they want is treatments that last for ever, like the drug deallers at the corner, they want to supply your next "fix". but where a drug addict will eventually go cold turkey and may become clean, a sick person is forced for ever to fork over big bucks to these drug deallers and their "treatments".

hey dont get me started......
