Since I'm trying to rehab both shoulders I figured I would do what I can to lose some unwanted mass(lots of it). I cant mentally get myself psyched to get on a treadmill or recumbant bike. Besides I have to wear an involved knee brace to use a tread mill.
So I called my neighbor who owns a heavy equipment repair and a construction company and he's delivering an old back-hoe rear tire to me today or tomorrow.
Gonna get out my 8 lb and eventually my 16 lb sledge hammer. This is the type of cardio that makes me want to do cardio. Plus its way more intense than walking really fast on a tread mill. (i cant run, shin splints/front calf pumps)

Sounds like that could potentially hard on the shoulders? I'd say get on the bike and do intervals. Great way to burn fat. Shouldn't need the knee brace either.

Bike or stairmaster on a decent level would eliminate shoulder use and promote weight loss. Stairmaster is a bit hard on the knees though.

Believe it or not it doesnt bother my shoulders with the sledghammer. If anything its in the realm of exercise that actually feels good the next day. As long as I dont go overboard. I was up on my roof with my 16 lb sledge getting ice off and I thought for sure the next day i would be in hell. To my suprise...nothing. Little sore in other places but my rotators were fine. Problem is tendonitis in the rear rotator part of the side delt area caused by bone spurs. Going in about 10 days to see about getting the shit removed.

The gym I would go to if I were going atm has nothing but recumbant bikes. They are so hard for me to get into. Feels like lazy mans cardio.
My favorite would be walking really fast at a 8-10 degree incline on a treadmill. But I have to wear a brace. I have a completely torn ACL and torn medial meniscus in my left knee. So that up hill walking really prys on the knee in the wrong direction and makes it really sore. Stair machine is out too. But actually light squats and heavy leg sled dont bother it...go figure. :verygood:

dude, I did sledgehammers for the longest time, and I use them for wrist training still...they are very hard on the shoulders if you're injured.

Finally got my tire delivered. I did a mild session yesterday to see how it went. I did what I would call 3 sets. 8 lb hammer.

Right x10
left x10
right x 10
left x 10
right x 10
left x 10
rest

did this 3 times. Takes apx 2 minutes per set. Holy fucking cardio!!. I stopped there cause I expected to be really sore today. I feel nothing. My throat and chest/lungs feel raw and have that bloody taste from being out of shape and doing high intensity cardio and breathing really hard.

Believe it or not my shoulders feel better today. It didnt bother my shoulders at all. During, after or today. I'm resetting and taking a swing each time. I'm not holding at the base of the hammer and raising back up each time while holding at the base. That motion would kill my shoulders. I think thats what you were referring to Traz.
I'm going to alternate days. Hammer, jump rope ect ect. Tonight is jump rope. After we move in a couple months and my shoulders both have surgery I'm going to get a bigger bucket loader tire to flip for cardio too. This back-hoe tire only weighs about 225 lb. But its a good starter for my 9yr old:evil: He was out with me doing sledge work too.

pull/push a sled, try jumproping

Pushing a sled would make me do a sort of pressing movement with my shoulders. This is the most problematic area. I wouldnt make it 10 ft, my shit would be on fire. It would also be very strenuous on my torn acl.
Pulling a sled would be a super no no for my torn acl also.

Jump rope is what my alternate will be. Just bought a new one.

I hate the bike too bro...this is what I do to atleast get myself into it. I walk on the treadmill @ highest incline for about 3 minutes to get the blood flowing. I then go to the bike and start at
level 2 for 1 min
level 4 for 1 min
level 6 for 1 min
level 8 for 1 min
level 10 for 1 min
....to highest level.....I then cool off for about 2 mins and do it one more time Its a good 15 mins that seem to really help me.
