trouble gaining weight

squid

New member
Hey all. I've been working out for years to try and put some bulk on this skinny frame of mine with limited success. By that I mean everyone *thinks* I weigh 30lbs more than I do (I weigh 136 (7.5% fat) and everyone says they think I weigh 160+). But I haven't been able to put on any poundage.

I do weights 4-5x wk, yoga once/wk and ride the bike once a week or so (just to keep the heart strong). I try to keep protein levels high but I just can't seem to eat enough. There comes a point where I just get sick and can't eat anymore. I also tried increasing my workout frequency but I think I was just overtraining. If I'm really intense with my current workout I get a little bigger but I still don't put on any poundage.

Help! I don't want to be huge, I just want to look good. I'd like to be noticed in a club sometime...is that too much to ask??

Thanks.

Duh. I guess I should give you an idea of what I'm eating...

A typical day goes something like this:

8:30 met-rx protein bar, oj.
11am snack-- blueberry yogurt
12:30 lunch-- 12" turkey sandwich from Subway
4:30pm snack-- cookies and milk :D
6om snack-- (totally random)
8pm dinner-- chicken and rice dish

You have got to be kidding me. Your eating like a little girl--Sorry but your never going to gain weight eating around 2000cals daily. You need EAT EAT and EAT some more. If you say you cant eat anymore, then forget gaining weight.

If your serious though try this--

That sample diet looks like a starvation diet. You may need to eat more than 30X your bodyweight to gain. I weigh 190 and when I last bulked I went up to 220 eating minimium 6500 cals daily. Eat anything you want, just make sure you have high protein(2grams per pound of bodyweight. Buy a good quality weight gainer--I like Champion Nutrition Heavy weightgainer 900. Mix with some ice cream and they are pretty good.

As far as training--
Stick to basics- Bench, Squat, Curl, etc.
Heavy sets Low Reps 3-4 Sets 6-8(MAX) Reps
Take 2minutes between sets so you can go heavy.
NO CARDIO. Sleep 8-10 hours

Everyone can gain weight, you just have to be willing to eat till your cant eat anymore. I thought I could not gain but when I finally got serious I did.

just eat as much as you can... at least 5000 cal/day and 250 g of proteins........ eat eat eat.... go get thounsands of tuna cans....

That's what most people say. I've been having trouble doing that though.

Also another problem I have is when I *do* manage to eat a huge meal it just passes right through. I guess I have an inefficient metabolism. I remember one night I had two huge steak dinners and the next morning it all just passed right out the back end.

Squid,,forget getting big,,u don't have what it takes.

You have tha pussiest attitude i've ever read on this board... i hope this whole thing is a joke.

You wanna get big? EAT 350grams of protein daily, 300GRAMS OF carbs, 100gRAms of Fat.
Don't bullshit yourself thinking you "can't" do it..that fucking word shouldn't even exist in your vocabulary...that word shouldn't even register in your brain. Stop being such a fairy and Eat. Fuck this "I can't " bullshit. If you honestly think you can't eat that much...THen don't fucking come and Ask us "how do i get big"...cuz we told you how... - EAT!!

Otherwize...just be "happy with who you are".

Ok Squid why don't you try this. Find out howmany calories you are taking in now per day. Once you have established that number, use it as your baseline. Step 2 Each week try to eat 500 calories more per day. 500 caloreis is not that difficult, it's like a peanut butter sandwich or a scoop or 2 of ice cream. If you bring yourself up gradually like this, you will begin to absorb more of your meals.

If you try to just jump up your caloric intake like everyone here is recommending, the meals as you said before will just pass through you. Your body has to be given time to adapt. If you do just go up yes you will adapt eventually, but that can be an uncomfortable process. This way is a bit less painful. Hope this was useful and good luck.

sleep

For the hardgainer, I suggest (along with stuffing your face constantly) waking up in the middle of the night and get a meal replacement shake into your system.. This might be the only time that your body will store anything, so take advantage of your body's low rate...

If you don't wake up in the middle of the night on your own, set an alarm, and have a shaker bottle with the dry shake next to your bed... Get up and fill it with water, suck it down and go back to sleep... I have even had hardgainers who didn't want to go through the effort of having a shake, have a protein (or meal replacement) bar or two next to their bed and eat it in the middle of the night... Its worked for many that I have trained... Good Luck!!

Sorry , I laughed when I saw those meals. Blueberry yoghurt? You should be downing a t bone steak with some baked potatoes with sourcream and some yams with blueberry youghurt . Like it was said before, you eat like a little girl. COOKIES AND MILK?
Man, you are starving yourself, and because you are an ectomorph, you are eating away any potential muscle you could be gaining.

Easy meals to digest
--------
- Weight gainers
- Cottage cheese (eat 5 cups of this sporadically)
- 2L of water perday? Try a gallon of whole milk
- PACK ON THE CALS BRO. Eat steak. Eat everything. U might gain some fat, but it you will lean down since you have a fast metabolism. Dont sweat it man, eat like a madman - not like a little girl.

Eat at least every two hours and don't say you can't. If you want to gain weight do what it takes.

Look everyone, when I say I "can't eat anymore" I mean I am throwing up and my body will *not* accept any more food. It does not mean that I am lazy or have no willpower.

When was the last time *you* ate until you threw up? I do it all the time. I am not fucking lazy, or weak, or a girl. I work damn hard at this.

The answer to your problems is a weight gain shake. If you cant eat calories then drink them!
Id suggest something like N-Large 2 from prolam, at 630 odd caloriesn per serving it's perfect.

Try something like this:

8:00 - cereal, toast, fruit, WHEY based protein shake

10:00 - N-Large 2

12:00 - two of your 12" Turkey sandwiches

2:00 - N-Large 2

4:00 N-Large 2

depending on when u train, im guesing evenings about 6:00/7:00 ?
after have a WHEY based protein shake.

8:00/8:30 - chicken, rice, veges or baked potatoe, tuna&mayo

10:00/10:30 go to bed

I know you may not like it but IS the only way!

as cozmokramer says,

"it's 90% diet 10% Training" <------ remember it!

This should help you squid

Ok squid, I know what it's like to be in your shoes, and trust me, you CAN grow. Maybe not as fast or as much as someone a little more endo or meso than you, but regardless you can pack it on. The rest of the guys are right -- to a certain degree, you do have to eat, but eating till you puke and taking in 250G's of protien is counter-productive. If your throwing it up, it's wasted anyways, and any more than 150g of protien a day for you is just going to overload your kidneys, not keep you in a positive nitrogen balance.
you should base your protien requirment on your LEAN bodyweight, fat doesn't need protein. Looking at your lean bodyweight (which would be about 118lbs, if what you posted is correct), then you should take in around 1- 1.5 g's of protien per pound of lean bodyweight per day tops!), and judging by your size you should only have 30-40g's at a time allowing 1-3 hours between each intake. Ok, now, as far as eating goes, you've got a start, but you need to expand on it, I find getting up earlier in the day allows me to eat more, and stimulates my appetite. Heres an example of how you should plan out your daily meal plan:

7:00 - 8:00am
1 meal replacement shake (go for one thats heavy on the cals.
1/2 - 1 hour later: breakfast
omelete and oatmeal, maybe a cup of cottage cheese with some fruit, just enough to leave you feeling full, but not stuffed like a pig.

11:00 - 12:00 another meal replacement shake (you can beef them up a bit by adding yoghurt, flax-seed oil, etc.)

1/2 - 1 hour later: Lunch
Try to mix up your meals (by that I mean some carbs, fat, and protein in each one) the idea of a sandwhich is a good idea, but go for one with a higher fat content ( for extra cals), and try to cook and use your own meat, rather than denatured deli style meat.
You can adjust that meal a bit as well, say:
12" sub with 1 cup cottage cheese&fruit
or 12" + a 6" sub, use your imagination.
Lose the cookies and milk, they're not going to help you much, i find staying away from sweet foods helps me.

Working out in morning stimulates your metabolism throughout the rest of the day, so what you might want to try (if your not doing it already) is to work out later in the afternoon, or at night. In this case lets say you workout about 3 hours after lunch

3:30 - 4:30 workout

oh, and try not to work out for more than one hour, and skimp on the cardio warm up as much as you can (I know this is probably common knowledge, I'm just trying to cover all my bases here)

right after you workout (within 30 minutes is ideal)
have another meal replacement shake.

1-1.5 hours after that shake, have another meal, in this case: Dinner

6:30 - 7:30 Dinner

Chicken and rice is a good way to go, throw in a salad and your pretty good. To figure out your meat portions, get a good calorie/protein counter and a scale, so you can plan out your portions more accurately. For meat, probably around the size of your fist is ok, maybe a little bigger.

and about 1 - 2 hours after dinner...another meal replacement shake (close to bedtime if you can)
And for shakes, try three a day that are good meal replacements (around 40-50g prot. & 250-350cal.)
For one or two of them I like to use a mass gainer (say around 800-1000cal per serving)

And setting your alarm to wake you in the middle of the night (around 4 hours after you fall asleep) and down one more meal replacement shake, and hit the sack.

Thats about it, get lots of rest 8-10 hours min.
Keep your workouts short and hard
only train each body part about once a week
do multi-joint power movements (squats, dead-lifts, bench, etc.)
drink LOTS of water (remember how much of your muscle weight is water--60%-70%) 3-4 litres a day is good.

Last of all be patient, it'll take a few weeks/months, but you'll start to notice the weight coming on, and lot of it is positive attitude, tell yourself your getting bigger and you will.

Let us know how you turn out.

Druze.

Hey bro, I was in a similar boat for years, and it really came down to the fact that I wasn't eating enough.

Now, don't get me wrong: I was indeed eating until I was literally almost ready to vomit!!
But that was my problem. Here's why:
By gorging myself every day, I became so sick and sluggardly and I felt so damn awful that I would get frustrated, depressed, and give up. I did this self-defeating cycle for yeas.

So, what have I changed? I started eating a little more with each meal. It's been adding up.
I eat way more than my body asks for, and by doing it gradually, I have increased the size of my stomach (internally) and appetite gradually over just a few months.

I am now gaining like crazy and just hit a weight that I never thought I'd hit.

P.S. - That tip about drinking a shake in the middle of th night is one I plan to implement!:)
