Toyota, on track to beat General Motors

fistfullofsteel

Well-known member
TOKYO (Aug. 3) - Toyota, on track to beat General Motors as the world's biggest automaker this year, said Friday its April-June profit jumped 32.3 percent to a record high for a quarter, lifted by strong overseas sales and a weaker yen.

Surging gas prices have proved a big plus for the Japanese automaker, as drivers flock to Toyota's fuel-efficient models, including the Camry, the best-selling model in the U.S., and the Prius gas-electric hybrid.

"The results are fantastic," said Tsuyoshi Mochimaru, auto analyst with Lehman Brothers in Japan.

Overseas sales are going strong, and the weak yen, which raises the value of overseas earnings when converted into yen, is making rosy earnings even rosier as Toyota's exports grow, Mochimaru said.

Group net profit at Toyota, which also makes the Lexus luxury model and compact Corolla, totaled 491.54 billion yen ($4.1 million) for the quarter through June, up from 371.50 billion yen the same period the previous year.

Quarterly sales rose 15.7 percent on year to a record 6.523 trillion yen, or $54.7 billion. At current exchange rates, that's more than the General Motors Corp.'s record quarterly sales of $54.5 billion, which the Detroit automaker marked in the second quarter of 2006.

But Toyota kept what some analysts say is a conservative forecast for the full fiscal year through March 2008, projecting net profit to inch up just 0.4 percent to 1.65 trillion yen ($13.85 billion) on sales of 25 trillion yen ($209.78 billion).

It also kept its vehicle sales target for the full fiscal year the same at 8.89 million vehicles.

"We posted substantial increases in both revenue and profit, our highest ever quarterly results," said Toyota Senior Managing Director Takeshi Suzuki.

Toyota has already surpassed General Motors in global vehicle sales for the first half of the calendar year, selling 4.72 million vehicle to GM's 4.67 million. Many analysts believe Toyota will likely beat GM for the full year in both sales and production.

Toyota has long surpassed General Motors in profitability. GM has been losing money in recent years, but reported its third straight quarter of black ink this week, on the back of restructuring efforts.

For the latest quarter, Toyota Motor Corp. sold 2.16 million vehicles worldwide, up 3.4 percent from 2.09 million the same period a year earlier, the manufacturer said in a statement.

Sluggish domestic vehicle sales were offset by greater demand in North America, Europe and the rest of Asia, Toyota said.

Even in Japan, operating profit improved because of solid demand for the Lexus, a model that brings in more profit per car than cheaper models, it said.

In North America, a market that's proving tough recently, Toyota sold 762,000 vehicles in the April-June period, an increase of 15,000 vehicles from the same period the previous year, on the successful launch of the Tundra truck and Lexus LS.

The yen's relative weakness against the dollar added 100 billion yen ($839.1 million) to Toyota's bottom line.

Cost reduction efforts offset the damage from higher costs of raw materials, the company said.

Like other Japanese automakers, Toyota was hurt by a temporary closure of a key parts maker in northwestern Japan, which was hit by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that killed 11 people last month. But Toyota says it can make up for the production loss by the end of the year.

Toyota shares inched up 0.1 percent to 7,080 yen ($59.41) shortly before earnings were released.

GM produces shitty vehicles. not surprising

until american car makers really step it up with their engineering, quality and design this will be the same old story.

they stick to the "sell to hillbillies and <real americans>" mentality and just pump out crap and assume people will buy because it's american.

europe and japan will always own them

There entire culture is diffrent

there is a matrix organzitation with alot input from everyone. Teams collaborating etc they were ranked the best employee i forget what year. they treat there employees well with alot of benefits (onsite). They use TQM- total quality managment- where everyone has part in customer satisfaction not just the Quality team....

why some of you are so anti-GM is beyond me, it's like you want them to fail
honeslty calve what has your negative experience been with GM? my guess is none

oh right, because your view is so unbiased.

you live in fuckin michigan.

they drive like shit compared to euro/jap cars, they do not last ANYWHERE as long, and they're not as aesthetically pleasing.

give me a lexus, mercedes, infiniti, audi, bmw anyday over a freakin caddy.

drive a few real cars and talk to me about quality

What so special about cadillac ? Because govt. fleets get them (for political reasons) doesnt mean the brand is good and reliable. Same with GM trucks.

bro not everyone lives the affluent life pushing beamers or maseratis
i ask again, what has your neg experience been with GM? not what you've heard from the media, personal experience

road tested and tried, both brands
i don't care what gov't contracts their are, GM trucks are solid
same with caddy
i have experience with both

i've driven them. and i know friends that have american cars and they all hate them. anyone with a significant amount of miles has their car in the shop constantly.......you'll never have that problem with a toyota or honda.

like i said, you live in michigan, it's part of the culture to drive an american car up there (without really venturing off to anything else). all my friends have american cars from michigan, why? just because

blanket stereotype bro
i'm not knocking the other brands, toyota makes nice cars and so does honda.
i drove out here (OR) in a honda civic and since i've been here i've been driving a toyota pickup. No comparison with the truck, everything about the 'yota is half assed and weak fabrication.
civic was a nice car though

Drove GM for years (we were using unmarked Impalas and Suburban) and they were by far the most unreliable cars ever. Even Ford with their Crown Vic and Explorer were a bit ahead. The few jap cars we had (Toyota/Lexus and Acura) were in another league. But again, the only reason why most govt./LE agencies keep these rolling POS is politics. That's it.

the UP (and most of michigan, except around the colleges) mentality is still "buy American"...they are in deep denial about what is a good car anymore.

fuck these stereotypes bro, not everyone in MI is a flag waving retard.
untill the japs make a super duty truck they will never win over the michigan crowd, plain and simple

they don't need to "win over michigan"....they have "won over" the rest of the country.

and NO, i am not happy about that...but ford, gm and chrysler brought this on themselves.

and that may be, i really don't follow the auto market.
but i know the japenese are lagging in one huge dept, trucks
i don't see any foreign super dutys on the road, nor dualies.
big segment of the market they have yet to crack, what keeps ford/gm/dodge alive and hopefully in the game

Super duty yes. Dualies is a niche market. Probably just a matter of time before Nissan and Toyota take this one too.

they have some catching up to do in the truck dept
hopefully this lag allows the big three to catch up in cars
even in the pacific northwest the trucks pulling shit are all american made

meanwhile all the other shit you own is made in communist china. i'm sure you own a bunch of electronic products made in japan too. using the excuse because it is made in the usa is dumb as it gets and hypocritical.

When I first came to the States I was all for buying european or japanese. I thought american cars (NOT TRUCKS) are sluggish and ugly and not reliable. I got a Jetta....thinking german made, great! Well, its made in Mexico and I did have a problem with it burning oil and the engine light was on after 2 and a half years. So, why should I buy a Jetta, for example, instead of Ford 500, lets say? Both are assembled in Mexico.

That said....coming from a foreigner....I would never ever lease or buy foreign! Seeing what kind of effect all this has on the families around me, I am deciding to support the american assembled vehicles.

And Manny....c'mon, man, you were comparing a Lexus with a Crown Victoria? Jesus Christ, every car has its category. Why dont you compare it with a Caddy or Lincoln?

And I would so agree with Gambino - the rest of the auto industry has still to accomplish the level of the american made trucks and SUVs.

Europe has a moto "Buy European". Even my own small old little country has a moto "Buy made in Macedonia". I guess I care more about this country than everyone else that is born here. BUY American!

I feel ya on that. I want to support the american people, so I will buy what they made as much as possible. We should open our eyes and see how outsourcing and buying not american made is gonna take us to the ground even more. This is at least mine humble opinion.

People care more about their own pocketbooks, while they fill the pocketbooks others.

Whoa............I sell cars for a living (GM)......and GM makes a great car....

Compare the Impala to the Camry SIX Cylinder

Impala gets 30 miles plus per gallon starts at 22,300 with a 3/36 bumper to bumper and 5/100,000 miles roadside assistance and powertrain warranty.....minus the rebates at about 1500 bucks and the markup at about 1500 bucks you can get a GM for about $19,000; V6, remote car starter (LT1), complimentary OnStar seating for six......the list goes on why GM is better.....sorry!

this is why lexus (toyota) and infiniti (nissan) have done so well in the luxury car market.

WHY pay Big Bucks for a car and not have it 99.8% reliable?

i can still hear the benz service writer telling my parents in the late 80's "dere ez NOTHING wrong witd da autombile...et iz da driva"

there hasn't been a m-b in their driveway since the early 90's. they have been SPOILED by lexus and maytag for reliability.

Everyone thinks Accords and Camrys are da shit.

The current generation Camry is having all kinds of quality issues including automatic transmission problems.

Read owner's reviews on the Accord at Edmunds and Yahoo autos and you'll see the vast majority of owners are disappointed.
