This weekend L.A. Dodgers vs. S.F. Giants

bonds hits number 662 off eric gagne

"Bonds' home run off Eric Gagne was the first hit off Gagne since Montreal's Vladimir Guerrero did it Aug. 20, 2003"

That also snapped some kind of scoreless innings streak for Gagne, but I can't find the stats.

Anyway, tonight

Pitching matchup

LA: RHP Jose Lima

1-0, 4.15 ERA in 2004
0-0, 6.00 vs. SF in 2003
4-3, 5.54 lifetime vs. SF

SF: LHP Kirk Rueter

0-0, 4.91 ERA in 2004
3-1, 1.50 vs. LA in 2003
11-9, 3.86 lifetime vs. LA

Keep in mind that Lima, once a 21 game winner, did not do too well the last couple of years and he played in the independent leagues last year before being picked up by Kansas City.

"For Lima, the start will be another step in his remarkable resurrection. A 21-game winner in 1999, he was out of baseball last spring, played independent ball with Rickey Henderson in Newark to earn a mid-season purchase by Kansas City, then went 8-3 only to be, as he described it, "lowballed" in contract talks.

So he accepted a non-roster invitation to the camp of the pitching-rich Dodgers and won a job with his arm and his attitude. He relieved Jeff Weaver on Tuesday night and retired all four batters he faced and now will start against the Giants."

It's Lima time!

Dodgers 5
Giants 4

Lima went 5 innings and gave up 2 runs, but was saved by the Dodger bats who scored 3 runs in the 6th to give him the win.

IN the 8th inning, with the Dodegrs up 4-2, Bonds hit #663 off of Darren Dreifort to make it a 1 run game. In the top of the 9th, the Dodgers got 1 more run to add some breathing room for Eric Gagne. Gagne really had me worried in this one, even more that last ngiht when he gave up the homer to Bonds. He gave up a solo homerun to Feliz, with no outs, walked the next batter, Neifi Perez sacrificed the runner to second then the next guy walked. So now its runner on 1st and 2nd, 1 out. Marquis Grisson at bat, and Bonds on deck. Luckily, Grissom hit into a double play to end the threat and the game. Gagne gets his 4th save of the season, the Dodgers pull 3 games ahead of the Giants and the division.

Paul LoDuca
4 for 5
Has hit safely in all 11 games this season and leads the NL in batting average with .512

Milton Bradley continues to prove a great acquisition by hitting a 2 run homer in the 6th, to bring that Dodger back into the game and tie it up at 2-2.

Game 3 tomorrow

Dodgers 7
Giants 6

Barry hit #'s 664 and 665 off of Jeff Weaver, but that was not enough, the Dodgers erased his homeruns by hitting back to back to back homeruns (the first one with 2 men on).
Eric Gagane once again got the save and struck out Marquis Grissom to leave Bonds on deck (again).

Over all, all 3 games were good nail biters, all of them 1 run games.

The rivalry continues next weekend as the Giants come to L.A. (I can hardly wait).

The Giants have too many guys with cold bats right now. Still, it's scary how Barry Bonds came so damn close to beating the Dodgers all by himself. Babe who?

who cares?
at the end of the season when hockey has fucked it self into oblivion
and football has petered out like it always has
and we are all saying lebron who?

we will still be watching bb and wondering if and when he will break hammering hank's record
meanwhile single handely saving baseball

remember folks baseball a few years ago when a strike shut it all down almost died

mcquire sosa petite rocket and bonds were all they had to pull people back
mcquire has retired
sosa as good as he is will always be part of the loveable cubs
petite and rocket are now astros

but barry is barry
juice or no
man has phenomal hand-eye coordination and quickness
steriods cannot make you a better player/batter
make you bigger and stronger
but cannot help you with your timing
bb's training was akin to bruce lee's training where there was much repetitive hand-eye practice

The steady, hammering drumbeat of Barry Bonds' bat relentlessly pounding opposing pitchers goes on -- thunderously, ominously.
On a windy, chilly night at SBC Park on Monday, Bonds provided a lightning strike of a homer -- the 666th of his career and his seventh in six straight games -- in San Francisco's 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres before 33,361 fans.

Bonds has now accomplished that homer-binge feat three times, including twice in 2001 when he set a Major League single-season record with 73 homers.

Bonds' feat was only part of the Giants' fracturing of a four-game losing streak, as pitcher Jerome Williams (2-1) shut the Padres down on a four-hitter over 6 2/3 innings and hot-hitting Marquis Grissom drove in three runs with a single and homer.

Giants outfielder Barry Bonds had a week to remember, and one opposing pitchers would like to forget.
The veteran was named National League Player of the Week for April 12-18 by batting .733 with six homers and 13 RBIs, while also tying and passing godfather Willie Mays' lifetime mark of 660 homers.

Some players don't have these kind of seasons, much less weeks, but Bonds was 11-for-15 with two doubles, six walks, seven runs scored and a Major League-high slugging percentage of 2.067 and on-base percentage of .810.

"I take for granted what he does," said manager Felipe Alou of the slugger, who has won 12 Player of the Week awards in his career. "After this week I don't think they will pitch to him with men on base anymore."

In the Giants' home opener April 12, Bonds hit a go-ahead three-run home run off Milwaukee's Matt Kinney for his 660th career home run in the Giants' 7-4 win. The next day he hit a solo shot to pass Mays, who had occupied third place on the all-time home run list since Hank Aaron passed him in 1972.

Bonds homered Friday off NL Cy Young Award winner Eric Gagne and added another long ball in Saturday's game against Los Angeles. Capping off the week, Bonds slammed a pair of homers Sunday, going 4-for-4 with five RBIs.

Other players nominated included: Moises Alou (.458, 5 HR, 7 RBI) and Aramis Ramirez (.462, 4 HR, 13 RBI) of the Cubs; Craig Wilson (.440, 2 HR, 5 RBI) and Kris Benson (2-0, 0.69 ERA) of the Pirates; Houston's Craig Biggio (.458, 2 HR, 10 RBI), Roger Clemens (2-0, 1.32 ERA) and Roy Oswalt (1-0, 3-hit shutout); Cincinnati's Adam Dunn (.471, 3 HR, 1.059 SLG); Paul Lo Duca (.500, 11-game hitting streak) of the Dodgers; Scott Rolen (.391, 3 HR, 10 RBI) of the Cardinals; and Arizona's Randy Johnson (1-0, 2-hit shutout).
