The Xenadrine Problem... My theory

Xenadrine sells. Looking at top sales items from most wholesalers, it sells at about 150% the rate of its closest competitor, Hydroxycut. However, I have a bit of a problem with this supplement; let me tell you why.

We all know how ephedrine is considerably more potent as a sympathetic CNS stimulant than caffeine. I have a lot of personal experience with the two. One of my favorite dieting combinations is a 200mg Vivarin (caffeine), a 20mg ephedrine HCL cap, and an 81mg mini-aspirin. When we compare the prices of ephedrine sources to caffeine sources (20mg eph. to 200mg caff.), the ephedrine is much, much cheaper. Some of the less reliable companies that produce EC stacks have used this to their advantage. They would jack up the ephedrine content and use less caffeine, but the label would still read "200mg caffeine... 20mg ephedra alkaloids."

My problem with Xenadrine is that it has a much more potent stimulatory "punch" than my homeade combination. Mind you, the ephedrine from Xenadrine comes from Ma Huang, which is not a source of ephedrine HCL. Rather, it is a conglomorate several isomers of naturally-occuring ephedra. However, no natural isomer of ephedra is more potent than ephedrine HCL in terms of stimulating a sympathetic CNS response. So, how could the 20mg of ephedra in Xenadrine be more potent than the 20mg in my combination? It can't! Caffeine and ephedrine are the only sympathomimetics in Xenadrine. Synephrine is a mild thermogen, but not a sympathomimetic. My hypothesis: Cytodyne has jacked up the content of ephedrine in Xenadrine. Is the caffeine content adulterated? I don't know, but it seems likely. By cutting back the caffeine content by 50mg, they save 1.5g per bottle. That's 1.5 metric tons saved per million bottles sold!

Well... That's just my opinion, but remember, just b/c an EC-stack gets you jacked doesn't mean it is the best for facilitating fat loss. Please feel free to post feedback about this.

It's good thinking, but I'm sure other companies have tested the product, and if found your case to be true, they would be using that to their advantage.

I've certainly thought of this argument. In fact, I've seen independent assays on a few products, and none of the ones I've seen test out to their label claim. Most products aren't completely off the mark of their labels, but they certain don't abide by the 10:1 ratio. Most products are closer to 7:1.

By legalities, it isn't exactly easy for a company to publish independent assays. The only assays I've seen have been from smaller companies, not huge, billion-dollar corporations like Cytodyne. From a legal standpoint, the risks of libel charges would probably intimidate most companies from pursuing this action.

I just don't see how 200mg of caffeine and 20mg of ephedra can feel like 200mg of caffeine and 50mg of ephedrine HCL.

I know what you're saying. I was using Ripped Fuel Extreme, which is pretty good. I ran out, took a couple Xenadrine instead, and heated up instantly. I'm back to my Adipo though.
