the pill...

Babydoc posted a VERY long post about all contraceptives about 2 years ago. It's still on the servers if you search.

Pills are 99% effective if used properly. Withdrawal has a roughly 8% failure rate, so if you practice both simultaneously, you should be .01 x .08 = .0009 or 99.91% effective although I think that 99% is good enough.

The best contraceptive to date is the Mirena IUD, with a failure rate of .01% It is good for 5 years and costs around $650 to insert if you don't have insurance. The hormone is NOT systemically absorbed so there are no effects other than NO PERIODS (YEAH!!!!!) after 3-6 months.

Hmmm...I thought I actually read on the package that is was 97% effective. I hope it's 99%...but I still don't think 99% is good enough...not enough to risk having a kid. That would really throw a wrench into the gears...so IMO not worth it.

The NuvaRing is as effective as the pill. Because its absorbtion is trans-mucosal, it avoids first-pass liver metabolism and does not have to pass through the GI tract (intestines) and therefore can be given in lower doses. It is very good because there are less user compliance failures but the theoretical failure rate is still the same as the pill (1%) as it has the same hormones and mechanism of action. It is the most expensive of the cyclical hormonal methods at around $45/mos.

From what I understand, from a girlfriend that got "caught" it is ineffective when on antibiotics.

You might want to monitor actual ovulation (around 12-16 days after first day of period) and just avoid having sex during that period of time.
