The pefect long distance rifle?

Hey Manny and crew. I want to start putting together a long distance rifle package. I have always been drawn to long distance shooting, but never had a decent rifle. I have heard a lot of good things about the Remington 700's, but I wouldn't know where to start with regards to ammo and optics and other accessories. Any ideas or suggestions?

I'd first focus on a caliber and then pick different parts or an "out-of-the-box" package cause most brands offers the common longe range calibers. Here's some to consider:

- .300Win Magnum: flat shooting compared to the .308 but greater recoil

- .338 Lapua: ballistics are almost the same as a .50BMG until 1000m but ammo is expensive and a some recoil too

- .50BMG ? few rifles chambered for this beast

I'D pick one of these. Of course you have stuff like the .300Ultra Magnum but let's focus on these three. The remi 700 is a good platform to start with. You may also consider MacMillian and Accuracy Internaitonal. Both are expensive but great. But the 700s are easy to find and parts are cheaper.

This is an example of a great custom rifle:

- 700 action

- Remington match grade stainless barrel (fluted or not, that's up to you)

- H-S stock (but you may keep the Remi factory stock)

- Harris bipod

- Leupold scope (MkIII varie-X 3.5-10 x 40)

That's a 4000-5000$ easy with a .300Win Mag. .338 or .50BMG ? Get ready to put som big money on the table.

Thanks for the info Manny. I had figured around 5K for a good rifle. I had planned on building this over time anyways. Of the three calibers it sounds like the .300 Win. Magnum was the best option for me. I will look at MM and AI as well. I don't know much about those companies. Do know any good sites or places to pick up these items?

Shit, must spread Karma before......

I decent setup that is useable in more ranges than a .50 cal is a remington 700 .308 with a heavy barrel. You can get a decent setup with a harris bipid, leupold scope etc for around 2K - MUCH cheaper than the exotics - and it will probably shoot better than you can - unless you are a REAL pro :). Many "SWAT" type teams use them, as does the military (m24 sniper package). IMHO I'd go for that. Leave the exotics for later (after you have the "Basics" and have TONS of extra cash lyin around).

what type of shooting are you looking to do? how far is considered far for you. there are several options available outside the 3 mentioned that are more funtional and are almost ballistic equals.

6mm br
6.5/284
6.5/06

300 win mag is a great all round caliber ammo available at most stores. Factory gun. of course seeing your looking for long range custom is the way to go.
if your interested you should check out Long range shooting websites.
308 win (7.62) is a great caliber for most people it is able to shoot 1000 yards with several bullet weights such as the 175gr.

give more details I am sure we can point you in the right direction.

With the right load, .308 is indeed a good option. But there're still better options (for more $$$$ lol). Just like you, I'd like Gab to eloborate on "long distance". 500m ? 700m ? 1000m ?

IMHO, short range (when talking about rifles) is 0-300m, medium 300-800m, long range is over 800m. a .308 will do just fine for the first two category but might be problematic for the third.

hrm... 700 to 1000meters - you may want to step up to a .50. Barret has some nice "less expensive" bolt actions. I've got an m82a1 - nice but pricey.

I am going to assume that your looking to punch paper targets at upto 1000 yrds 900 meters and that you are new to shooting and do not reload.

Based on that I would suggest the readily available calibre

270 winchester
6.5/55 swedish
300 win mag.

I still like the 308 for most applications not sure were your located but finding 1000 yard ranges is no easy task.

Rifles
Remington Sendero line is nice ask Oubeta about his experience
Winchester sharpshooter is just as good
Some people swear by Savage arms there afforable functional and a good bang for the buck, you may have to change the trigger.

Scopes
Leupold Mark IV series are quality glass you get what you pay for 4x-16x 50 obj
Swarovski scope are top notch
Night force NXS series. this is the best of the best for long range shooting.

Wow, so many choices. I have some research to do. As an FYI, I have been shooting since I was six. I started with BB guns and shit like that and I have always been into target shooting. I won several local .22LR competitions in my area. Once I got older, I moved on to handguns and now visit the range once or twice a week where I usually offload about 1000 rounds per visit. I currently do not reload, but I am looking to get into it. My grandfather owns a pile of land near here, and my uncles have set up quite a nice range on a piece of it. Markers at every 50 yards up to 1000. The all just fuck around though with standard hunting rifles. I want to get back into rifles. Handguns are fun, but there is something about nailing your target 1000 yards away that really appeals to me. Thank you all for the suggestions and keep them coming. The more info and suggestions I get, the better I will be able to choose the rifle that's right for me. It would be nice to try one of each "flavor" out, but no one around here could give two shits about long distance shooting. It's all about the shotguns around here.

Two years ago I invested in a custom Lazzeroni warbird for a Dawles sheep hunt in Alaska. I needed a rifle capable of reaching out towards at least 500 yards if not farther. Well, the Lazzeroni warbird was the perfect rifle. I bagged a great B&C sheep at just over 500yds. The warbird is a .308 cal and just the rounds are impressive to look at. The casing on them is about the size of a quarter. The muzzle velosity is just over 4000fps. With the optics and other accessories I got with it, I'd say I have close to $7,000 tied up in it. It is definately not cheap, and a typical box of ammo will set you back about $100. Thats the biggest downside of it cause it will only fire the .308 warbird round. No other .308 rounds will work in it. I would definately say it is probably my pride and joy of my weapons collection. You can buy a regular warbird built on a Sako frame for I think in the neighborhood of around $1,500. If you want the best and want all your friends to envy you, buy a Lazzeroni. You can check them out at http://lazzeroni.com/ let me know what ya think. Oh, if you do get one and go on that once in a lifetime trip like the one I took to Alaska, be sure to take about 5 extra boxes of ammo with you, cause you cant just run down the road and pick up an extra box. My buddy that went with me not only shot a Dawles sheep, but he bagged one of the biggest ass Grizzleys I think I have ever seen as well. You definately want a long range rifle when you shoot something like that. Know what I mean?

That sounds like an amazing time. I hope to one day hunt Alaska or the Yukon. I am familiar with the Lazzeroni rifles and ammo. Never shot one but have read reviews on their products. I think the ammo is based on the old Weatherby 378 magnum but not sure. It is similar to the recommendation that Manny suggsted which was the 338 Lapua it is based on the 416 Rigby case, both are huge cartridges. and have ample amounts of down range energy.

Paper punching with either of these two rounds will be a bitch as latamier has indicated they ain't cheap to shoot.

Get something that will be enjoyable to shoot and you will have access to large amounts of ammunition.

good luck with what ever you select.

Latamier how was the recoil on your rifle. did you use a bipod or your pack for a rest?

Wow, those Accuracy international rifles are pretty badass. That would be a complete package too, I wouldn't have to fuck around with buying other pieces and assembling one.

Damn after reading all the post I feel like a true red neck.I own several, but the two I use for deer are a Rem.700/270 with a Leupold 50mm,130grain federal premium. and for elk a Browning A bolt 7mm with Leupold 50mm,150grain federal premium. All factory loads.Thank goodness I've never had to take a shot over 300 yards. It takes a lot of practice.

I use a bipod with mine and the recoil is not too bad with the muzzle break on it. My buddy did not originally have a muzzle break on his and the difference was quite noticeable compared to mine. His kicked like a mule. Mine fires really well and recoil is not too bad. I would compare it probably to a 7mm mag or 300 win. All in all, still my favorite rifle except for each round costing you about $10 each.

They're among the finest. They make their AWM version in both .300WM and .338 Lapua

http://www3.mb.sympatico.ca/~jhipwell/awm.htm

One like that is around 4000$ + the scope and bipod. But that's all you need. No gunsmith tweaking to do. So for 5500$ max, you have a badass. But make sure to try it before cause not everyone likes the AI stock.

Damn Manny, after seeing that rifle, you have me wanting one bad! I thought the Lazzeroni was a bad ass weapon, but from the looks of this one it has mine beat hands down. I like the tacticle look better than the old hunting rifle look also. Do you know of anybody that might want to buy a second hand custom Lazzeroni warbird that has had at the most of 3 boxes of ammo fired through it. The wife gave me the O.K. for this one providing I sell the Lazz. Doesnt it suck to have to get permission to buy something. She is the best wife in the world though so I'm not really complaining. I will be putting the Lazz up for auction on www.auctionarms.com later this afternoon. If you know anybody that would want to help me move it fast, I will give them a finders fee. Thanks for the good link.

That is a really awesome rifle. I may have to have a chat with my wife soon. Heh heh heh.

I'd would have to check and eventually, refer them to your auction. I only saw a Lazzeroni once. Hard to find item so I guess someone, somewhere is looking for one.

BTW I saw a couple of weeks ago a AI for sell on gunbroker.com I believe. Rifle had less than 100 rounds and was like 1000$ below its price tag.

If you are looking for something that has a proven track record with long distance precision, the Tubb 2000 rifle may be your best bet, specifically their "tactical" version. Also look into Palma shooting as this competition takes place at the ranges you mentioned, although they are limited by the rules of that discipline to using a .308 with a 155 grain bullet. One of those rifles in another chambering may suit your purposes because as Manny said, the .308 becomes marginal at 1000 yards.
If you're building up a rifle from scratch, I would look at a custom action over a Remington, Winchester, Savage, etc. as you will be saving money in the long run by having an action that does not need to be "blueprinted" to get it where it needs to be for that kind of long range shooting. Pick one of the top riflesmiths and tell him what you want to end up with, and what you want it to do, then trust him to pick the parts and pieces to get you there.
Again, all this assumes that the performance of the system is most important to you. Lots of people are into having cool looking equipment but don't really push it too hard. Go to a public pistol range and see how many people move their targets out to the furthest distance the range will allow.....not too many, if anyone at all. I don't mean to deride the Lazzeroni, as it's an amazing piece of engineering, but it kind of makes my point. I also have buddies that have .50BMG rifles that haven't been fired in years. They are also really neat pieces, but made to do something that the owner really doesn't do with it, so it's design purpose is compromised into filling a role other than what it was meant to do. Sometimes that is fine, but usually you'd have been better off with something else.

Damn, way to many options now. Manny, you still have hook-ups right? Send me one of each to play with so I can make my final decision.

Whats the main purpose of the long distance rifle yer lookin for?

For big game like Moose, Elk, Caribou and Bear I shoot one of two dif rifles and both have distance and knockdown power. A 8mm Mag and a 375 H&H Mag.

Loads for both rifles are custom with f215 primer, H4831 Powder, 82Gr weight with speer 170 bullet.

Have taken all species above up to 500 yds

Hey Manny, my Lapua MCRT .308 tacticle got delivered this past Monday. I am putting Zeiss illuminated optics on it now as we speak and having it bore sighted. I guess I know what I'll be doing all day Saturday at the range. I am off all next week from work and looking forward to spending quite a few days in the woods with it trying to restock the freezer. All the guys at the store that saw it before I picked it up just about orgasmed all over it saying how BAD ASS it is. Thanks for the advice. I'll let you know how it shoots next week. Oh, by the way, the lazzeroni sold really quick. My dealer let me put it up at his shop on consignment. I only had to cough up just under $1,000 additional for the Lapua. I feel like a little kid at Christmas time.
