The Greatest German General You've Never Heard of...

even speilberg portrayed this in saving private ryan
when the US GI's shot dead the surrendering Germans
some people just can't handle being beat with grace

the malmedy massacre?
I"ll tell you the story
true story
kampgruppe Peiper captured a few hundred americans
and in thier own testimony
they were afforded equal protection with the german troops from the allied bombardments
that massacre far behind the front lines?
late 1944 germany needs bodies
the front line troops are at the ,duh, front line
most likely 16 year old boys left behind to guard a hundred prisoners
and there was a ruckus
and they opened up
no way Germany would waste quality front line combat troops guarding prisoners in their last gasp offensive
that's silly
Patton's troops murdered German prisoners quite regular
you won't read about that though
or see it on TV

The war trials in Europe were a three ring circus. Compare it to the Japanese war crimes trials...they dissected US servicemen alive and got six years in prison.

I give credit to Manstein for ignoring orders to use his soldiers to round up "undesirables." I lament Von Paulus not disobeying what he called, "...that Bohemian corporal" when he chose to not break out. Sixth army represented the best and brightest and Hitler squandered their lives for his own ego.

at the high level Albert Speer is who I respect
I read his Spandau Dairies as a teen
"Inside the Third Reich" the TV making of his same titled book came out on broadcast TV (Rutger Hauer was Speer) I think 1979 give or take a year.
I have inside the third reich but have never read it
I got so much out of his spandau dairies (what he wrote during his 20 year imprisonment)
then Guderian
who exasperated was in Hitler's bunker almost until the end
argueing his points when most feared repriasal
and manstein of course
Guderian and Manstein
either one of them on equal terms would have defeated a patton led force in short order

it's embarassing it took the US until summer 1944 to invade the continent
after everthing was safe and the soviets had bled the german army
DDAY?
blah
it was over
still took the US two months to break out of the beachhead they thought they would do in 2 weeks
come on now

Peiper was mock hanged i think 19 times
his British counsel believed in him and kept fighting for him
I read a whole book on it
sickening
that Brit guy saved him though
and peiper was eventually murdered in 1976 and is regarded as the last official casualty of WWII
he was an old man then and they burned his place down
they found him and his sheperd and spent shell casings around him
and blood trails in the leaves

he always said during his trails he wished to sacrifice himself and accept the blame for his men
his men came first
the british guy saved him

I,probably more than anyone, know your appreciation for Peiper. I always considered myself a "muddy boots soldier." That's my grandfather's influence.

all the more fuct up considering the historical jealouses they two countries have had.
