yup 1st generation -- they're from Naples region. I keep saying I'm going to go see the place they grew up and still havent.

you?

mothers side from caserta (near naples)

fathers side right from rome

i grew up with my mother, aunts and grandparents who are all from caserta

my mom was 16 when she came here, it still amazes me how families of all cultures can pick up and move to start a better life - i never forget this sacrifice - mom had me when she was 26 (my age loololol @ the thought of me having a kid right now)

my uncle who was 14 when he came to america died within a year due to some type of cancer or rare lymph node disease - my fam still to this day doesn't understand what happened

I was in napoli last month. It is a pretty trashy town. So much garbage lying around everywhere. Literally 3 and 4 foot piles of garbage lying in the streets. It was horrible. Vesuvius and pompeii is pretty bad ass though. not far from napoli.

I started learning some italian, my good fratelo.

Started with corresponding with Dutch penpals, then progressed from there. Watching Dutch TV, talking to my Dutch friends on the phone, etc.

Cool - you must be a cunning linguist !!

I suck at languages. I lived in Thailand for 11 yrs and can barely keep a conversation going.

I think the Dutch are the greatest linguist in the world. They pick it up like it is nothing.

they were made of better stuff -- we're all spoiled rotten lol. My grandfather gave up everything over there to come to America with his kids. over there he was a local politician, the guy everybody came to for the answers. over here he had to shine shoes first 10 years and get called a wop. but he never regretted it.

Well they are exposed to foreign languages very heavily from very early childhood. That makes it all much easier you know. Dutch is a heck of a lot closer to english than Thai, give yourself credit. Moving from one Germanic language to another is a lot easier. A lotta similarities.
