The Dreaded "Overtraining"

Jbranken

High End Bro

I have fallen victim to complacency and somewhat stupidity. I've recently finished building my home gym and its incredible. No more traffic going to the gym or fighting for equipment once I'm there. In fact, it has been so convenient that I've completely failed to take any time off from lifting in quite some time. Ive been going hard at it for months and making incredible gains and have completely forgot to incorporate an off week. Honestly, i haven't taken many off days either.

Earlier last week I would start feeling extremely sluggish at work and as the days went on I found that simple tasks such as walking became difficult. I started losing motivation to work out and falling asleep became extremely difficult although i felt very tired. BP was steadily rising each day and I've completely lost the ability to focus on simple tasks and im constantly lethargic. These are signs that my CNS has taken a strong hit and I've allowed some serious overtraining. I'm going to take a week or more off from all workout activities. I've definitely learned my lesson on this one. Can't believe I let myself do this. I'm normally good about rest periods but its hard to stop in a good rhythm.

Anyone else ever had a bad experience with overtraining? I feel like complete shit! Lol

Yup,

A few years back I was running before work, working out at work (we have a small gym, its sweet) then working out in my basement in the evening. I was in like a thousand kcal deficit keto diet. I kept this up for damn near all summer. It sucked! I was allways exhausted. I would also go on long runs on the weekends (10+ mi). I was really lean about 8.5% @185 all natty btw but I paid dearly. I felt like trash all the time, got tendonitis really bad (still healing) bottom line i was doing too much, eating too little and not sleeping enough.

Ive learned a ton since then. I try not to push it too hard and I listen to my body allot more.

We all get encapsulated in the 'zone' and that is a good thing, just listen to your body bro.

i have been fortunate to not have this happen to me.. i been going at it pretty hard for years, longest break was maybe 2 weeks tops. i did do 1 straight month of a deload where i dropped my weights across the board, that really seemed to help me and now I am breaking PR's again.

^^^ I could definitely benefit from more deloads if I didn't feel like taking a week off in the future

I never take a week off I just Deload when in beat up and it works great for me. I do take 3 days off every week though and only train 4 days. I used to train just about every day and that didn't work out so well for me. 4-5 days max is all I can really do without going backwards. But when I train its an hour and a half to two hours of kicking my own ass. You also have to find the right amount of frequency for you and adjust as necessary.
