The cholesterol myth

I just finished this book and I am seriously considering getting of my cholesterol meds

Anyone else read it?

The premises of the book is that high cholesterol is not a good indicator of heart disease and the side effects of statins are not worth the non-existent benefits of statins

He makes a pretty good argument. The guy is a cardiologist. However he also believes in some kind of weird theory about the earth being positvely balanced and humans needing to walk barefooted.

There is another book out tho by another cardiologist called the cholesterol hox
So Im thinking there has to be some validity

Hi Try

I haven't read the book myself, but I'm familiar with the argument surrounding statins.

From my perspective a High Total Cholesterol reading isn't a good indicator of heart disease at all and I agree. However, I would say that a High LDL or/and VLDL reading that is consistantly presented as elevated over time, is a about as good a predictor of heart disease as you might get. If this is backed up by a diagnosis of Metabolic Disease and poor lifestyle habits, then the cholesterol reading pretty much adds weight to that prediction.

What is the argument against statins in the book? My GP has mentioned putting me on statins recently because my fathers side has a history of high bad cholesterol (no heredity heart disease though). I told him I wasn't keen on the idea.

What's your opinion on the statins argument?

Craig

Hey Craig
The whole premise of the book is that cholesterol is not a good indicator of heart disease and the sides of statins are worth the not certain benefits that a statin may or
May not bring

Key points made in the book by
Dr. Sinatra:

Half of his heart patients have low cholesterol and the other half have high cholesterol

Dr.'s only ever test us for HDL "good" cholesterol and LDL "bad" cholesterol. However there are three types of HDL and one is bad and two types of LDL and one is harmless

He states that HDL/triglycerides and being under ratio of 2 is a better indicator of whether you will or will not have a heart Attack.

Cholesterol is needed in the body for several reasons: the most important one to me is that without it you can't produce your sex hormones and energy levels suffer

Cholesterol is harmless in the body until it gets oxidized
Oxidation occurs through things we eat:
Mostly processed foods and SUGAR

Also talks about how our omega 3s & 6s are ou of whack which cusses oxidation we are not eating enough fish and we are eating too many oils. 3 are anit inflammatory and 6 are flammatory

Stress is also a big factor

He talk about things we can do instead of taking statins.

My family has a history of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease. All of my moms paternal side died of heart attacks. I have made the decision to stop my Lipitor becaus of the book. I have low test and I suspect that part of the reason is because of the statin I have been taking

Statins cause memory loss and a list of other things as well. In addtion it blocks the pathway to coenzymeQ10. This enzyme is responsible for alot things including energy.

The argument that high cholesterol is NOT an indicator of heart disease is an old argument. If you simply use the search feature , you'll see it's heavily discussed on this board.

The question is if one does have high VLDL what does one doe about it if they do NOT believe in the use of statins?
I think the thread would have more participation if you'd head down the road of talking about solutions instead of restating the same ole' problems that have been stated on the board over the years

Gjohnson

Your probably right, however, this is a new concept to me so I've read the book and wanted to hear others opinions.

Do have a suggestion for keeping heart disease at bay
